At approximately 7:20 a.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022, the River Edge Police Department responded to a report of an adult male lying on the ground along Ackerson Street. Responding officers located the male, later identified as 62-year-old Michael Kestenbaum, who was deceased. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit was notified, and an investigation was initiated. The weeks-long investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the River Edge Police Department revealed that TYRONE CLOSS and ANIESA SAMAD were responsible for Kestenbaum’s death, which occurred in Hackensack, NJ, and that they subsequently abandoned his remains in River Edge, NJ.

As a result of the investigation, on January 19, 2023, TYRONE CLOSS and ANIESA SAMAD were each charged with second-degree aggravated manslaughter, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-4a(1); second-degree desecration of human remains, N.J.S.A. 2C:22-1a(1); third-degree criminal restraint, N.J.S.A. 2C:13-2a; third-degree elder abuse, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-8; and fourth-degree obstruction, N.J.S.A. 2C:29-1a. CLOSS and SAMAD were remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending their first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would also like to thank the River Edge Police Department, the Hackensack Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
