CHESTER NJ, As Democrats in New Jersey seem all but certain to have a lock on legislation that will give driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, Republican U.S. Senate candidate from NJ Rik Mehta speaks out against it.

A first-generation American, Mehta is the son of immigrant parents who came to the United States legally in 1969 from India. “This is a slap-in-the-face to every immigrant who has gone through the painstaking process of coming here legally; it undercuts the value of legal immigration and respecting our laws,” Mehta says.

By giving driver’s licenses to the undocumented, Mehta contends, we will encourage many more to come to New Jersey’s Sanctuary Cities illegally and, in turn, will make our state less safe.

“Holding undocumented immigrants to a different standard than American citizens is wrong, whether it is giving them driver’s licenses, looking the other way when they commit crime, or not enforcing our immigration laws,” says Mehta. “The fact is that we must secure our border and we must end the practice of Sanctuary Cities, as both of these are a threat to our national security and put our citizens’ lives at risk.”

Mehta proclaims that only when our immigration laws are fully enforced can we begin to address what to do with the undocumented who are already here. “I am committed to rebuilding innovation in New Jersey through legal immigration programs. While the Democrats’ issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants puts us two steps back, I plan to introduce ‘Stop Light Legislation,’ which will consolidate all Visa programs into one of three channels: a Green Card for permanent residency, a Yellow Card for pending review and temporary status, and a Red Card for short-term visitor status with a fixed end point. This will put us two steps forward towards fixing our broken system, will stop the number of undocumented immigrants, and will preserve our legal process, advancing innovation and economic development for America.”
