Blood Supply Plunges to Post-Pandemic Low: New York Blood Center Declares Unprecedented Second Summer Emergency

Ridgewood NJ, The regional blood supply across New York and New Jersey has plummeted to its lowest level since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the New York Blood Center (NYBC) to issue a historic, second emergency declaration this summer.

Just weeks after a previous blood emergency declaration around Memorial Day, a perfect storm of environmental and operational disruptions has pushed local inventories to a critical breaking point. This marks the first time in NYBC’s history that two distinct blood emergencies have been declared in a single summer season.

The Perfect Storm: Why the Blood Supply is Critically Low

Maintaining a stable blood supply relies heavily on predictable daily routines, open donation centers, and steady community turnout. This summer, multiple severe factors have collided simultaneously to disrupt that balance:

  • Extreme Weather Barriers: Dangerous heat waves and severe storms have kept donors indoors and forced the cancellation of local blood drives.

  • Infrastructure Failures: Widespread, prolonged power outages and ongoing storm cleanups across NY and NJ have further crippled regional donor turnout.

  • A Depleted National Safety Net: Historically, when one region faces a shortage, blood centers across the country share resources. However, low national inventories have severely restricted this standard safety net.

“We prepare for seasonal challenges every year, but the combination of extreme weather, disrupted routines, and low national inventories has created an unprecedented situation,” explained Andrea Cefarelli, Chief Operating Officer of Blood & Laboratory Operations at New York Blood Center Enterprises.

Just 2 Days of Supply Left: Type O- at Absolute Critical Risk

The regional blood inventory has dropped to a mere two-day supply, well below the safe threshold required to reliably support local hospitals, emergency rooms, and trauma centers.

The situation is most dire for Type O- negative blood, the universal blood type used by emergency personnel during life-or-death situations when a patient’s blood type is unknown. Type O- inventory has fallen to less than half a day’s supply.

Who Your Donation Helps:

Every single donation directly supports vulnerable populations across the NY/NJ region, including:

  • Trauma and accident victims

  • Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

  • Individuals living with chronic blood disorders like sickle cell disease and thalassemia

  • Organ transplant recipients and patients undergoing major surgeries

How to Step Up and Save Lives

NYBC is calling on all healthy, eligible community members—especially those with Type O blood—to take action immediately.

  • Whole Blood Donation: Eligible individuals can donate every 56 days.

  • Platelet Donation: Platelet donors can safely give up to twice per month.

  • Expanded Eligibility: Thanks to recent updates to FDA guidance, more people are eligible to give blood today than ever before.

While walk-ins are fully welcome at all donation sites, appointments are highly encouraged to help streamline operations. Local businesses, community organizations, faith-based groups, and schools are also urged to host emergency blood drives or help spread the word.

To check your eligibility guidelines or schedule your lifesaving appointment, call 1-800-933-2566 or visit the official website at nybc.org.

  1. Just wondering. Why do we donate blood for free, and then the hospitals SELL it to the patients?
