Trenton NJ, Colonel Patrick J. Callahan regrets to announce the untimely death of Trooper II Marcellus E. Bethea, badge #7829, Troop “D”, Moorestown Station, who passed away during training.
Trooper Bethea served with the New Jersey State Police for over eight years and was a member of the 156th State Police Class. His commitment and passion for serving the citizens of New Jersey exemplified Honor, Duty, and Fidelity.
Please keep Trooper Bethea and his family in your prayers. Details with regard to his viewing and funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

Officials have yet to provide an update on the investigation into the tragic passing of a seasoned trooper who was undergoing training to join the esteemed TEAMS unit within the State Police.

Marcellus Bethea, a proud alumnus of Burlington Regional High School and a dedicated member of the State Police for eight years, tragically passed away on Sunday at the NJSP headquarters in Ewing.

Bethea was actively engaged in the demanding training regimen required to join the TEAMS unit—a select group of 30 officers renowned for their expertise in handling hostage situations, conducting rescues, and executing anti-terror operations.

According to information available on the NJSP website, all aspiring TEAMS members must successfully complete a rigorous underwater recovery course, which tests both physical endurance and mental resilience.

In a poignant statement, Governor Phil Murphy paid tribute to Bethea’s unwavering commitment to duty, describing him as an exemplar of the core values—Honor, Duty, and Fidelity—enshrined in the State Police motto. Bethea’s dedication and selflessness serve as a testament to the noble ideals upheld by the law enforcement community.
