Wallington NJ, a veteran Wallington firefighter demonstrated extraordinary courage by rescuing a resident from a house fire on Tuesday afternoon.
Off-Duty Firefighter Springs Into Action
Robert Decker, a 20-year veteran of the Wallington Fire Department, was working at Wallington Plumbing Supply when he spotted flames engulfing a neighboring home on Wallington Avenue around 3:18 p.m.
Without hesitation, Decker rushed into the burning building, where he found an adult trapped inside. Braving thick smoke and intense flames, he carried the individual to safety.
Victim Hospitalized, Investigation Underway
Emergency responders transported the rescued individual to a local hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been released.
“We’re incredibly proud of Firefighter Decker’s bravery and selflessness,” Mayor Melissa Dabal said in a statement shared by the Wallington Fire Department.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Wallington Police Department, and Wallington Fire Prevention Office are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which was reported to have started in the kitchen of an apartment.
