Lodi NJ, The retail apocalypse has officially hit the open seas. West Marine, the premier Florida-based marine and outdoor outfitter, has formally filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

As part of a massive corporate restructuring effort, the company announced it will shut down 59 retail locations across 23 states. The sudden downsizing follows a perfect storm of mounting heavy debt, hyper-expensive commercial leases, and a significantly weakened consumer boating market.

Inside the Chapter 11 Filing: The Financial Damage

According to online court documents, West Marine officially initiated its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings on May 17. The financial records paint a staggering picture of the retailer’s fiscal distress:

  • Creditors: Upwards of 100,000 entities owed money.

  • Estimated Assets: Valued between $500 million and $1 billion.

  • Estimated Liabilities: Ballooning between $500 million and $1 billion.

In an official statement addressing the restructuring, West Marine corporate leadership noted:

“West Marine is closing select retail locations as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 restructuring. This decision reflects our effort to align our store footprint with our current business needs, while continuing to evaluate our portfolio in coordination with landlords.”

While the company has confirmed it plans to support local store crew members impacted by the layoffs, specific severance or relocation packages have not yet been disclosed.

Liquidation Sales: How to Score Deals on Boating & Outdoor Gear

There is a silver lining for boaters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts. West Marine confirmed that every single brick-and-mortar storefront slated for closure will host massive inventory liquidation sales to clear out remaining merchandise.

Deals are already live in select markets. For example, the West Marine hub in Spokane recently announced via Instagram that their closing liquidation process has officially begun and is projected to run through August or September. If you have been waiting to purchase high-end marine electronics, foul weather gear, or safety equipment, now is the time to check your local store.

The Full List of West Marine Store Closures

While the company has not yet verified the exact final operational days for every affected location, the restructuring hit several major coastal communities particularly hard.

Among the 59 locations being shuttered nationwide, the New Jersey market is losing three major hubs:

  • Eatontown, NJ: 178 State Route 35

  • Toms River, NJ: 213 Route 37 East

  • Cape May, NJ: 791 Route 109

  1. They raised their prices on many items that can be bought elsewhere
And as usual private equity will line their pockets at the expense of consumers and employees
    what a shame
