Westwood NJ, the Westwood Regional School District board has given final approval to a parental rights policy that requires the district to notify parents when children display behavior deemed harmful.

Under the policy, school staff and administrators must notify parents or guardians when they observe an “adverse effect” on a student’s well-being, including the use of firearms, tobacco, alcohol, vaping products or other substances; peer, academic or athletic pressure; a change in school performance; and eating disorders, suicide attempts, self-harm or anxiety, among other triggers.

Notification cannot however be based on characteristics defined by New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination, which includes race, ancestry, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation and disabilities.

If a District staff member believes notifying a parent would put the student at risk of abuse or neglect, they must notify agencies including the state Department of Children and Families, the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, or the Westwood or Washington Township police department.

Under the policy the District staff have an obligation “to keep students’ parent(s) reasonably informed with respect to all material matters pertaining to their children,” .

  1. Common sense prevails.

    1. This is NOT new policy; whenever a child portrays behavior deemed harmful, parents are notified.

  2. Why is it even a question as to notify parent s or not ? Where is the logic ? When I attended Westwood schools, if you talked to much in class your parents knew that day .

These our our children. It’s the duty of the school staff to tell us about these issues just as they are obligated to tell us about academic progress . But it’s NOT their responsibility to act as surrogate parent nor withhold vital information about our kids
Thank God my sons are out of school and I don’t have to deal with this illogical “thought ” process .

    1. The logic is: If the child hasn’t told their parents something, it is for a reason- they are scared of what their reaction might be.

How hard is that to understand?
