What constitutes “repeat parking” and why is it banned?

“Repeat parking” is the act of feeding a parking meter beyond the maximum permissible time posted for parking at a specific location.  Example:  if the posted time limit for parking at meters on East Ridgewood Avenue is 3 hours between 9AM and 5PM, it is unlawful to leave your vehicle in place at any meter there for longer than 3 hours during the noted time period, even if you’ve put additional money in the meter.

Why is “repeat parking” banned?  “Repeat parking” is banned to facilitate turnover in parking spaces.  Retail merchants in particular believe that people are more likely to patronize stores when parking spaces are readily available nearby.  If there were little to no turnover in parking places, merchants believe patrons would become frustrated and spend their money in communities other than Ridgewood.

This is how “repeat parking” is described on the Village’s official PARKING GUIDE:

REPEAT PARKING/FEEDING METER
Is not permitted. Once the maximum time on the
meter is passed, the vehicle must be moved not
only out of that spot, but out of that lot or to a
new street.

YOUR OPINION WANTED:  Does it make sense to permit the movement of a vehicle to another lot, or to another street, once it has been parked for the maximum permissible time, or does this defeat the main objective of creating turnover so that parking spots are readily available?  Please weigh in below.

  1. “repeat parking” began many years ago to prevent shop owners employes and commuters who take the bus and train from taking the parking spots all day.

  2. doesn’t seem like the counsel has thought this through as they need a definition of repeat parking. If repeat parking is allowed then there is no reason for 3 hour meters other than you have to go out and put more money in which is a nuisance if you are an employee in Ridgewood. the problem was increased when the town started with the sale of the all day parking permits for commuters. Having parking permits for only Ken Smith will temporarily solve the problem. Of course a permanent solution is needed. How about we just build a parking garage on the property owned by the village right next to the train station (where train parking is now)

  3. Almost all of the parking lately seems to be for long term commuter parking and very little for the average shopper.

  4. What happens when you come to a meter which has time left and you need more time than the meter is showing? If you can put money in, is that going to be considered “repeat parking”?

  5. Sandy–no. you can add up to 3 hours.

The requirement to move the car elsewhere in Ridgewood is pretty sufficient to accomplish the goals of preventing all day parking.

  6. I’m just gonna wipe the chalk off my tires… C
    And park all day……
