Once you’ve checked with SEVIS and confirmed that you’ve properly registered with the system and that your program is active and in good standing, the Administration will give your SSN. Because updating your status takes time, it’s best to apply for an SSN about 10 days after completing SEVIS registration. An SSN takes roughly 4-6 weeks to be issued.

You do not need to reapply if you were already issued an SSN when you participated in such a program. Your SSN is good for the rest of your life.
