Hackensack NJ, When a fire broke out on the third floor of 95 Anderson Street this morning, the situation had all the ingredients for a major disaster. However, thanks to a combination of cutting-edge notification technology and proactive tactical training, the City of Hackensack Fire Department (HFD) turned a potential tragedy into a masterclass in fire suppression.
Here is how the HFD 2nd Platoon kept the city safe today.
Seconds Count: The Gamewell Box Advantage
The emergency began with a Gamewell Box Alarm notification. Unlike standard systems that may have a delay in third-party reporting, this system notifies on-duty HFD personnel immediately upon activation.
Because the department knew about the fire the instant the smoke hit the sensors, the 2nd Platoon, led by Deputy Chief of Operations Michael Thomasey, was on the scene in record time.
Tactics on the Ground: Sprinklers and “Big Water”
Upon arrival, fire crews found a kitchen fire in a third-floor apartment. While a single sprinkler head was successfully keeping the flames in check, the HFD didn’t take any chances:
-
The Attack: Crews stretched a 2.5-inch hoseline to the third floor.
-
Containment: The fire was quickly overhauled and confined strictly to the unit of origin.
-
The Result: By securing utilities fast and limiting smoke spread, most residents were able to return to their homes within just 90 minutes.
Overcoming Modern Construction Challenges
Modern high-rise buildings present unique “life hazards” and construction designs that can be a nightmare for firefighters. Hackensack is staying ahead of the curve through a specialized program designed by Training Captain Michael Oates.
“Members on all shifts have proactively responded by conducting detailed pre-planning of these large-scale buildings throughout the City.” — HFD Statement
This “Pre-Planning” means that before the alarm even rings, your firefighters already know the floor plans, hydrant locations, and potential hazards of the buildings they protect.
A Team Effort
The successful operation was a city-wide collaboration:
-
Hackensack Police Department (HPD): Managed traffic control to ensure fire engines had clear access.
-
Mutual Aid: Neighboring companies stood by to cover the rest of the city while HFD worked the scene.
-
Investigation: The fire is currently under investigation, though officials say it is not considered suspicious.
