We Are Seeing The Effects Of Seattle’s $15 An Hour Minimum Wage
Tim Worstall

Possibly the best starting point of this argument is this rather newer post here.

Some time back I wrote a piece entitled “We can predict the effects of Seattle’s $15 an hour minimum wage.” It’s here. And without going into boring detail it essentially said that we’d see what we would expect to see from a rise in the price of something, that is a fall in the demand for it. Ever since I’ve had comments from people insisting that human labor just doesn’t work that way. That if wages rise then actually more people are going to get employed. An example came in only this morning:

Between January and December of 2014, while Seatac’s business owners (and their customers) were absorbing the cost of paying minimum wage employees $15, unemployment decreased 17.46%, falling from 6.3% to 5.2%. It turns out that you CAN increase the minimum wage (even in large increments) and increase overall employment at the same time.

  1. What a joke. These idiot democrats are trying to buy votes from those who have a brainless job. Not every job is a career. Unless your a socialist like Bernie.
This will backfire and jobs will be lost. Automation will eliminate these morons.

  2. We are living in an era of the fastest-ever rate of workplace automation, affecting almost every kind of job, but most aggressively, unskilled, rote work. The pace of this trend is affected by the cost-benefit ratio. While this minimum wage legislation may feel right and honorable, economic reality will always win through, and while a declining few will benefit from this in the short-term, the majority will fall by the wayside at an accelerating rate, replaced by order/payment touch-screens, and machines to do the cooking, all of which can operate 24/7.

  3. More likely the restaurants would turn to the more modern trend of including tips in the dinner cost. The servers would be paid normal wages. This is a much preferable system for both restaurants and diners.

  4. The restaurant industry is a haven for illegal aliens.

  5. You are correct, Rich. It’s also the biggest offender in terms of under-reporting income. If you have ever had any experience in the restaurant business, you will know that only credit card paying customers are recorded. Cash payments are not. Undocumented workers make up much of the staff and they don’t even exist on the official books and records.
