Ridgewood NJ, Tonight night, Monday, October 20th, marks the new moon (no moon day), when the sky will be dark — a significant time for many who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

Diwali is traditionally a five-day festival, but the third day — when the skies are dark (New Moon Day) — is the one most people recognize as “Diwali Day.” It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil, and for many Hindus, it marks Lord Rama’s coronation as king, a story cherished for over 7,000 years.

For our Jain neighbors, Diwali marks the Nirvana (liberation) of Lord Mahavira, the twenty-fourth and last Jain Tirthankara, around 600 BCE.
For our Sikh neighbors, the festival commemorates Bandi Chhor Divas (Liberation Day) — the release of Guru Hargobind Ji and 52 princes from captivity in 1619.
Diwali is also observed by some Buddhist communities, particularly those influenced by Indian traditions.
This year, because of some calculations on how lunar calendar is calculated and how it alings or not aligns with the Georgian calendar, Diwali starts afternoon of Monday, October 20, and ends around midday on Tuesday, October 21.
As a result, some area schools are closed Monday, while others are closed Tuesday, depending on which calendar their school admins referred to.
You may hear fireworks over the next few evenings —
🎆 Some families are celebrating tonight (Sunday) since it’s the weekend and more convenient to celebrate today.
🎇 Others will celebrate Monday night,
✨ And some will celebrate Tuesday night as the festival concludes.
If you see homes lit with lamps, candles, or strings of lights, it’s part of this beautiful tradition — spreading light, joy, and goodwill. If you knock on those doors, there is a good chance you will be greeted with some Indian sweets.
