Wyckoff NJ, the town of Wyckoff issued a statement on Tuesday following criticism from residents about the lack of timely communication regarding a “boil water” advisory over the weekend. The advisory, which also affected nearby towns, was lifted on Monday after bacterial tests returned negative, but the delay in notifying residents left many frustrated.

The boil water advisory was initially posted on social media by Ridgewood’s town manager on Saturday, stating that a significant drop in water pressure in a Midland Park neighborhood—caused by excessive lawn watering—had prompted the advisory for parts of Midland Park, Ridgewood, and Wyckoff.

However, many residents, especially those in Wyckoff, were unaware of the advisory. One resident expressed frustration, saying, “I’m livid over the lack of transparent communication regarding this issue. I learned from a friend and then spent half an hour texting friends and reaching out to elderly neighbors who had no clue.”

Wyckoff officials responded to the criticism by acknowledging the communication failure and vowing to improve emergency notification efforts. In their message, they explained that Ridgewood Water, a department of the Village of Ridgewood, manages the water system for Wyckoff, but the Township of Wyckoff does not control Ridgewood Water’s operations or communications.

Wyckoff officials emphasized that they had expected Ridgewood Water to notify all affected customers via a reverse 911 system, but this did not happen. They have since expressed their dissatisfaction to Ridgewood’s management and urged the implementation of a more effective mass notification system.

“We share in the frustration of our residents and have urged Ridgewood Water to implement a more robust communication strategy to ensure that critical messages, like boil water advisories, are delivered promptly and accurately to all customers,” the statement read.

Wyckoff’s Township Committee reassured residents that they are working closely with Ridgewood Water to prevent future communication breakdowns. The town encouraged residents to stay informed and reach out to the Township with any concerns.

For more updates and information, Wyckoff residents are encouraged to sign up for the reverse 911 system and monitor official town channels.

  1. Why does Ridgewood own a huge water company when they can’t even manage the town.? Look at the empty storefronts and the people that are supposed to be running this town: new awful garbage cans, turtle signs, pavilions, feed the frontlines. What about the important stuff? They are all over photo opts and spending our money on stupid things. They spent more time on feed the front lines then they did on empty store fronts. No one knows where 4 million dollars went but certain restaurants survived while shops were run out of town. Now we have all these water issues that can’t be swept under the rug or covered up or lied about because other towns are involved. This is bad folks. We need new council members and new management in all departments. We need to take our town back. We need smart people at the helm. NOT common folk with self serving agendas.🤞🏻

    1. Long overdue. The Village need not be in the water business (or trash business for that matter), and should immediately seek offers to purchase the company. Allendale garnered something like $18,000,000 for its utility. I have no idea what Ridgewood Water might realize, but why not look into it? Residents would benefit from having a professional company supplying water, not a bunch of political hacks and dopes who forget to flip a switch to turn on water pumps (and then blame their favorite boogie-man, lawn watering). Vote for change this November. It’s important, especially for the Schedler neighbors.

      1. and the Habernickle neighbors who have toxins also. and a full time business taking over the park

  2. The biggest water department screw up in memorable history, yet the Village manager defends their performance. What a joke!

  3. The water sucks.

  4. 5 years ago, current Wyckoff Mayor ran on the promise he’d do something about our dire water situation. Nothing but a vague Social Media announcement that only their faithful followers are going to see, stating that they share in our frustration and encourage Ridgewood Water to do the right thing? Pathetic. When’s Mayor Melchionne going to fulfill that promise? The only reverse 911 calls I got about this were from Ridgewood and Midland Park. Wyckoff’s idea of notifying residents are junk emails and Instagram.

  5. Ridgewood water has issues and should not be accepting awards from anyone. They certainly know how to get a hold of you to fine you for watering when you are not supposed to or for you to pay your bill. Why not be smart and proactive and get emails and cell phone alerts. ridgewood is poised to create an app but they apparently need to get their act together to alert customers about issues in a time sensitive manner. It is outragous and unacceptable to allow this to happen.

  6. Vagianos is busy campaigning so he can get re-elected and Keith Kazmark, village manager is busy having his photo taken somewhere, and was probably on a ball field when this whole fiasco started.
    #Go team.

  7. Watch the knuckleheads around town start planting Vags/Peron and bee dude lawn signs…all for a field that won’t get built and the hopes we may hit the target of 20 barbershops in a 1 mile stretch in the cbd

    1. How does the chamber of commerce / and council rep peron approve 12 barbershops from WholeFoods to Renatos (3 in past 2 mths)

Who are the landlords for these buildings that continue to be rented without consideration for other small businesses and the overall small business development within the cbd.
