Fair Lawn NJ, A Fair Lawn family has filed a major lawsuit against the local school district, alleging that officials sat by for years while their daughter was subjected to relentless harassment, eventually leading to a mental health crisis and suicidal thoughts.
A Pattern of Harassment: From Middle School to High School
According to the lawsuit, the abuse began in the 2020-2021 school year at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. The student, then in sixth grade, was allegedly targeted by classmates for her weight, appearance, and perceived sexual orientation.
The harassment wasn’t just verbal; the complaint details physical intimidation, including an incident where a student threw a football at her to knock food out of her hands. By the time she reached Fair Lawn High School, the bullying escalated to include ethnic slurs, with students allegedly calling her father a “terrorist” because she wore a pro-Palestine sweatshirt.
“Systemic Failure”: District Officials Named in Suit
The lawsuit takes aim at the top, naming several high-ranking administrators and staff members who the parents claim failed to follow the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and mandatory HIB (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) protocols.
Those named in the legal action include:
-
Superintendent Rui Dionisio and former Superintendent Nicholas Norcia.
-
Principal Michael Weaver (Middle School) and Principal Paul Gorski (High School).
-
Valerie Pascale, High School Anti-Bullying Specialist.
-
Various teachers and child study team members.
The parents allege that despite numerous reports, the district “erroneously failed” to find that the actions constituted bullying, leaving the student unprotected and the offenders without disciplinary consequences.
The Breaking Point
The toll on the student’s mental health was devastating. After years of anxiety and therapy, the situation reached a breaking point on the third day of her sophomore year. Following continued harassment from male students, the girl expressed suicidal ideations while at school.
She has since been removed from the classroom and placed on home instruction, requiring “intensive psychological treatment” to cope with the trauma.
Seeking Accountability
The family is now seeking damages for the violation of the New Jersey Civil Rights Act, accusing the district of fostering a hostile learning environment. Neither Superintendent Dionisio nor the family’s attorney, Zachary Green, have released a public statement regarding the ongoing litigation.
