In total, one-third of teens reported using at least one of the five major sites (YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook) almost constantly, mirroring a trend observed in the previous year’s survey.
YouTube’s popularity extends beyond teens, with a staggering 2.7 billion monthly active users. The platform is poised for further growth in 2024, marked by initiatives like ending legacy pricing and charging all premium users $13.99 per month from January. Google Podcasts is set to close in 2024, consolidating podcasts within YouTube Music as a one-stop-shop.
Beyond its streaming dominance, YouTube is at the forefront of AI innovation with tools capable of cloning voices and generating music from a user’s hum.
While YouTube’s ascent is undeniable, concerns about the potential negative impacts of social media are rising. The American Psychological Association advocates for teen training before engaging online. Despite the risks, the allure of YouTube stardom has made “influencer” a coveted dream job for many young individuals.
