Califon NJ, Early Wednesday morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 2.2-magnitude aftershock in Hunterdon County, centered in Califon around 1:44 a.m. This marks the 200th aftershock New Jersey has experienced since the significant 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Tewksbury in April.

Understanding Aftershocks

Roberto Masis Arce, a Ph.D. candidate at Rutgers University, explains that these aftershocks are part of the Earth’s natural process of readjusting itself following the initial quake. “Every time there’s a readjustment, there’s an aftershock,” Arce says. According to the USGS, any seismic activity near the main earthquake’s location that is of a lower magnitude is classified as an aftershock. They note that it can sometimes take years for the region to stabilize.

No Reported Injuries or Damage

The Hunterdon County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) confirmed that there were no reports of injuries or damage from Wednesday’s aftershock. However, they emphasized the importance of preparedness for future seismic events.

Safety Tips for Earthquakes

Brandon Fahey, with Hunterdon County OEM, advises residents on how to stay safe during an earthquake:

  • In a Vehicle: Pull off to the side, put the vehicle in park, and remain inside.
  • Indoors: Stay indoors and find a safe spot.
  • Outdoors: Move away from structures and into open space.

April’s Significant Earthquake

The 4.8-magnitude earthquake in April was the strongest New Jersey had experienced in over a century, with tremors felt as far as New York and Connecticut.

Staying Informed and Prepared

As aftershocks continue, residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared. For more information and safety tips, visit the USGS and local emergency management websites.

  1. 2.2 is nothing…that’s like a beer fart at a Jet game.

  2. Especially at a jet game, they are farting from both ends of their body
