Mahwah NJ, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the indictments of MOLLY R. CAMPBELL (DOB 3/21/1989; Single; and employed as First Year Medical Resident/Expired) of 10 Saint Paul Place, Brooklyn, NY and ANTHONY M. KOPIECKI (DOB 6/2/1989, Single, First Year Medical Resident/Suspended) also of 10 Saint Paul Place, Brooklyn, NY on charges of Strict Liability for Drug Induced Death. The indictments are the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, the Mahwah Police Department under the direction of Officer in Charge Captain Stephen Jaffe, the Jersey City Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael Kelly, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Anthony Cureton.
On Monday, May 7, 2018, the Mahwah Police Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a medical emergency at a private residence. The victim was determined to have suffered from an overdose of an unknown drug, and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, Rockland County, NY where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted by the Rockland County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that the victim died of acute cardiorespiratory failure due to MDMA/”Molly” intoxication.
An investigation was initiated by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Mahwah Police Department into the source of the MDMA/”Molly” purchased and ingested by the victim. The investigation revealed that Molly CAMPBELL and Anthony KOPIECKI had manufactured and sold the MDMA/”Molly” pills to the victim. On May 8, 2018, Molly CAMPBELL and Anthony KOPIECKI were arrested in Jersey City and charged with Distribution of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, a crime of the 3rd degree. Both were released with a first appearance date of May 23, 2018.
The investigation into the victim’s death continued and on February 28, 2019, Molly CAMPBELL and Anthony KOPIECKI were indicted by a Bergen County Grand Jury for the following crimes:
1. Strict Liability for Drug Induced Death, 1st degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-9;
2. Knowingly operating a CDS Manufacturing Facility, 1st degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-4;
3. Conspiracy to Possess CDS-MDMA/Molly in a quantity greater than one-half ounce but less than five ounces, 2nd degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2/2C:35-5(a)1;
4. Conspiracy to Maintain/Knowingly Operate a CDS Manufacturing Facility, 2nd degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2/2C:35-4;
5. Conspiracy to Possess CDS-MDMA/Molly in a quantity greater than one-half ounce but less than five ounces, 2nd degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2/2C:35-5(a)1;
6. Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) (2 Counts – Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-LSD, 2nd Degree and MDMA/Molly, 3rd degree) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2/2C:35-5a(1);
7. Distribution of CDS, (2 Counts – Lysergic Acid Diethylamide-LSD, 2nd Degree and MDMA/Molly , 3rd degree) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5a(1) and N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5(b)7;
8. Possession of CDS-MDMA/Molly, 3rd degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10(a)1; and
9. Possession of CDS- Lysergic Acid Diethylamide/LSD, 3rd degree, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10(a)1.
Anthony KOPIECKI was arrested on March 4, 2019 in Paramus for the Strict Liability for Drug Induced Death charge. Molly CAMPBELL is currently working outside of the United States and, upon her return, will surrender to face the same charge.
Acting Prosecutor Calo states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and would also like to thank the Mahwah Police Department, the Jersey City Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
