Ending state health insurance program for legal aliens lawful, court rules

The Legislature did not overstep its authority by allowing the Department of Human Services to end a health insurance program for thousands of low-income legal resident aliens last year, a state appellate court panel ruled today.

In reaching its decision, the three-judge panel refused to reinstate or enroll nearly 12,000 to the state’s FamilyCare program.  (Spoto, The Star-Ledger)

NJ Transit is just OK, says a customer survey

Despite the mediocre rating, many say they use the system even though they have a car.

By Wayne Parry
Associated Press

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. – NJ Transit riders are not thrilled about the price of a ride, late trains and buses and service interruptions, and they gave the sprawling statewide system mediocre marks in a new customer-satisfaction survey.
Yet the riders realize that few better alternatives exist. About two-thirds of respondents said they used the public transit system even though they had a car, and would recommend the system to friends and relatives.

>Christie’s increase in school aid is detailed

>Christie’s increase in school aid is detailed

By Rita Giordano
Inquirer Staff Writer

The Christie administration released new school aid numbers Tuesday that detail Gov. Christie’s $850 million increase in state education funding.

The increase was disclosed last week with the governor’s $900 million in line-item vetoes on the fiscal 2012 budget passed by the Legislature, but the district-by-district breakdown was not.

The governor’s $850 million increase in school aid is less than the more than $1 billion the Legislature wanted but more than the $250 million increase Christie proposed in the winter.

>The creation of the Office of Asset Recovery.

>The creation of the Office of Asset Recovery.

Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan today announced the creation of the Office of Asset Recovery. During last year’s campaign Ms. Donovan pledged to establish such an office “…to review fees paid to consultants and other vendors, investigate questionable payments and sue to collect moneys improperly paid by the County or any of its agencies.”

According to Ms. Donovan, “last year we pledged to reduce the cost to taxpayers by freezing County government spending, stopping governmental waste and recovering as much money as possible through a new, dedicated, office.  Today’s announcement fulfills yet another commitment.  We cut spending by $30 million in the proposed budget we inherited; we have cut waste in all areas including the elimination and sale of over 50 employee operated County cars and we have now created the Office of Asset Recovery.”

Ms. Donovan said that the new Office will function within the County’s Department of Law and will be self-sustaining.  She said that while the Office will seek civil remedies “any criminal activity uncovered during our ongoing reviews will be immediately referred to local, state or federal authorities for criminal prosecution.”

“This is not a witch hunt,” Ms. Donovan said.  “But it is clear to anyone who has followed County government spending practices that there have been excessive and sometimes redundant costs.”

She continued, “We plan to review and question construction costs, particularly change orders, which have driven costs beyond acceptable levels.  And we plan to assess every purchase to make certain that the County got the full bang for its buck.”

Ms. Donovan concluded, “Not all government waste is the product of fraud and misconduct.  Vendors and consultants make billing errors just like everyone else.  While rooting out official misconduct, our Office of Asset Recovery will also welcome information regarding unintentional billing errors and work with the private interests involved to resolve those mistakes.”

Obama says he cannot guarantee Social Security checks will go out on August 3

President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.

“I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.

Amber Ready : It’s astounding that Fairview gave Frank time off to work at his other job

>Amber Ready : It’s astounding that Fairview gave Frank time off to work at his other job

It is astounding that Fairview gave Frank time off to work at his other job “saving Fairview much needed revenue”. Someone should be investigating the politics in Fairview and why shortly thereafter Frank would be promoted to Chief. It seems the good taxpayers of Fairview have been paying for services and positions over and above what was required.

The following announcement was from Amber Ready as disclosed to BusinessWeek: “AMBER Ready Announces Executive Changes
07/14/2009

AMBER Ready Inc. announced new key leadership appointments to help support the company’s rapid growth and spur greater national awareness of the AMBER Ready Child Safety Initiative. Effective immediately, law enforcement executive Frank Del Vecchio, who has served as Senior Vice President of the company for the past year, has been named as Chief Operating Officer and is tasked with managing AMBER Ready’s day-to-day operations and growing workforce. The company has also welcomed Gregory Thomas, a nationally recognized school safety expert, who will guide and advise AMBER Ready’s executive management team on its strategic business development efforts. Del Vecchio has more than 20 years experience in law enforcement and also currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Police of the Fairview Police Department in Bergen County, New Jersey.”

Amazing that the “law enforcement executive Frank Del Vecchio” could be “tasked with managing AMBER Ready’s day-to-day operations and growing workforce” while working full time as the Deputy Police Chief, and within months Police Chief, of the Fairview Police Department.

Something is very wrong here. The “effective immediately” announcement was made 7/14/2009 yet it seems Frank took those weeks off several months later? Very wrong.

>NJ government does not compute for much of day

Numerous New Jersey government departments experienced computer delays and shutdowns Monday, marring a plan by the Motor Vehicle Commission to launch expanded services and slowing some non-essential State Police operations.

Most departments were back to full computer operation or coming back online by the middle of the day, said a spokesman for the Treasury Department, which oversees the state Office of Information Technology.  (Jordan, Gannett)
