Tuition at N.J.’s public colleges, universities third highest in the nation

Tuition at N.J.’s public colleges, universities third highest in the nation

Tuition at New Jersey’s public colleges and universities is the third highest in the nation, averaging $12,399, according to a report from the College Board released Wednesday

That price tag — $3,744 above the national average — is up 13 percent over the past five years, as is tuition at the state’s community colleges, which now averages $4,218, according to the report, titled “Trends in College Pricing 2012-2013.”

A high cost of living and a relative lack of state support for public colleges and universities help make New Jersey’s schools expensive for students, experts say. The state ranks 32nd in per-capita spending on higher education, according to the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities.  (Alex, The Record)

Judge rules against parents in Camden case, kids to remain in failing district schools

Judge rules against parents in Camden case, kids to remain in failing district schools

Sub-Par education forced on children by Judiciary

An administrative law judge yesterday ruled against three Camden parents hoping to yank their kids from public schools on the grounds that they were failing to provide a “through and efficient” education.

The court’s decision in Vargas v. Camden adds to the state’s never-ending debate over constitutional rights to a quality education.

Essentially, the parents filed a class-action complaint with the state arguing that their children should be entitled to attend another district or even private school on the public’s dime because they were suffering “irreparable harm” for every day they stayed in the Camden system.

As part of the case filed with state Education Commissioner Chris Cerf, the three petitioners sought immediate emergent — or emergency — relief to flee what is arguably the lowest-performing district in the state.   (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)

What Was It Like To Work For Boss Menendez?
Posted: 24 Oct 2012 12:00 PM PDT
Rob Eichmann
https://conservativenewjersey.com/what-was-it-like-to-work-for-boss-menendez

Monday, CNJ began a series on New Jersey’s junior United States Senator, Robert “Bob” Menendez.  The series started with his lies about the beginning of his political career, and then explored his slick manipulation to become Mayor Of Union City.  Over the next several days CNJ will continue to examine various aspects of his public life, how that affects the decisions he makes, the votes he takes, and who the constituents are that he really represents.  Today, a first hand account of layoffs in Union City and what he was like to work for as the  Mayor of Union City.

What have we learned about United States Senator Bob Menendez since the start of CNJ’s special report on Monday? First of all, we’ve learned that the Senator wasn’t straight with us in his book, Growing American Roots.

Here’s some of what the Senator left out: Bob Menendez didn’t get his start in politics as a reformer. He actually got his start by helping to defeat the reformers and re-installing his mentor, machine boss Bill Musto, as Mayor of Union City. For his efforts, Menendez was rewarded with two patronage jobs – first as a personal aide to Boss Musto and then as the paid “Secretary” of the School Board. Then, when a federal investigation was making things hot for the Union City Democrat machine, Menendez turned on Musto and testified against him at his corruption trial. After Musto was convicted, he ran for commissioner (one of five who among them choose who will be mayor), but was defeated. So he cut a deal with the Republican Party to run on a slate backed by Governor Tom Kean. Menendez was elected to the Commission but then broke his word to the GOP and made himself mayor instead of a Republican. As mayor, he found the machine he had once been part of had bankrupted the city, so he asked Governor Kean for a bailout, which he got courtesy of the GOP.

Now we’ve all heard the scare-stories about Mitt Romney being shopped around by Senator Menendez, his colleagues, and his cronies. You know the drill: “I had a job and then Mitt Romney called us into a room and boom!” Fair enough, but did you ever hear of anything like this?

Less than 24 hours after city voters had turned out of office the incumbent slate of city commission members headed by Rhyta Musto, a uniformed patrolman stood at the front door. He checked all large handbags and shopping bags, making sure that employees did not leave with city records.

“We just want to make sure the records stay in city hall,” explained Police Chief Herman H. Bolte, whom the commission last year tried to oust in what was reported to be a dispute over police effectiveness.

Upstairs, secretaries with Civil Service job security prepared themselves for transfers from high-visibility, front office jobs to unknown assignments.

When Bob Menendez makes claims to be pro-worker, pro-middle class, or pro-women think about the following report from The Record (July 30, 1988) and then think again.

A Paterson-based chiropractor admitted Wednesday in state court that he helped defraud insurance companies by setting up an illegal practice while his doctor’s license was suspended.

Craig Klein, 46, of Ridgewood, pleaded guilty before state Superior Court Judge Greta Gooden Brown in Paterson to one count of theft by deception. Though the crime generally carries three to five years in prison, Klein would receive probation under a plea agreement when he’s sentenced Jan. 11.

Klein said he knowingly allowed fraudulent and misleading Personal Injury Protection insurance claims to be submitted to more than 30 automobile insurance companies between December 2010 and February 2011.

New Jersey Ranked 2nd Highest State and Local Tax Burden

New Jersey Ranked 2nd Highest State and Local Tax Burden

Tax Foundation Ranks All 50 States for Total Amount Paid by Residents

Washington, D.C., October 23, 2012—New Yorkers faced the highest state and local tax burden in the country in fiscal year 2010, while residents of Alaska can celebrate the lowest, according to a new study by the Tax Foundation. Between those two extremes – both consistent over several years – a number of states in the middle of the pack have seen significant fluctuations.

After New York, the states with the next highest state and local burden are New Jersey, Connecticut, California, and Wisconsin. Following Alaska up the list of states with the smallest burden are South Dakota, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Wyoming. The biggest changes in state rankings from the previous year include Delaware (17th to 31st), Colorado (39th to 32nd), Oregon (23rd to 16th), North Dakota (30th to 35th), and Washington (33rd to 28th).

The Annual State-Local Tax Burden Ranking report estimates the average total tax burden for residents of each state, including both the in-state taxes they are subject to as well as taxes they pay to other states, such as those paid by virtue of working in, traveling to, or buying products from other states. This method takes the point of view of the individual taxpayer, counting all taxes they pay, no matter to which state they are paid. Many other tax measures instead reflect the perspective of a state’s tax collectors, and focus only on what each state government takes in.

The nation as a whole paid 9.9% of its income in state and local taxes in 2010, the most recent year for which data is available. That percentage is consistent with the total from 2009 but down significantly from 10.3% in 1977, the earliest year for which the Tax Foundation has done such estimates. While fluctuations in the national average have been small in recent years, burdens among the states can vary widely. New York state residents pay 12.8% of their incomes in state and local taxes while Alaskans pay only 7.0%.

“Some states are able to shift significant portions of their tax burdens to nonresidents, with Alaska being the most aggressive. The Last Frontier is able to export over 75 percent of its tax collections to residents of other states, by virtue of taxes on oil extraction,” said Tax Foundation economist Elizabeth Malm. “Resource-rich states, such as Alaska and Wyoming, are only the most dramatic examples of tax exporting. Major tourist destinations like Nevada and Florida are able to lower residents’ burden by taxing tourists, who are often nonresidents. Nationwide, over a quarter of all state and local taxes are collected from nonresidents.”

Tax Foundation Background Paper No. 65, “Annual State-Local Tax Burden Ranking” by Elizabeth Malm and Gerald Prante is available online.

The Tax Foundation is a nonpartisan research organization that has monitored fiscal policy at the federal, state and local levels since 1937. To schedule a media interview, please contact Richard Morrison, the Tax Foundation’s Manager of Communications, at 202-464-5102 or morrison@taxfoundation.org.

Bergen sends $1.1 billion more in taxes to Trenton than it gets back in state aid

Bergen County Courthouse

Bergen sends $1.1 billion more in taxes to Trenton than it gets back in state aid

Bergen County taxpayers sent $1.1 billion more in sales and income taxes to Trenton in fiscal 2010 than the county received in state aid, while lower-income Passaic County got back more than twice as much in aid as it sent in taxes.

That’s the conclusion of a new study by researchers at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers, called “Fiscal Flows in New Jersey.” The study did not look at the entire state budget, but at two taxes — sales and income — and three forms of aid: school, municipal and county.

“It’s not unexpected,” said Joseph J. Seneca, a Rutgers economist who co-authored the report. He said it confirmed the results of similar research done eight years ago.  (Lynn, The Record)

Down in the polls, Kyrillos still has Christie’s confidence

Down in the polls, Kyrillos still has Christie’s confidence

Despite being way behind in the polls with little time left to make up ground with voters, Governor Christie said Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Joe Kyrillos can still pull off an upset against incumbent Democrat Bob Menendez.

Kyrillos, a veteran state lawmaker from Monmouth County, trails Menendez by 18 points, according to a poll released last week by Quinnipiac University’s Polling Institute. And with only two weeks left before voters go to the polls, nearly 60 percent of those polled said they still don’t know enough about Kyrillos to form an opinion.

But Christie, during a campaign event with Kyrillos at a Burlington County diner on Tuesday, said he still has faith in the GOP candidate.  (Reitmeyer, The Record)

Fiscal cliff approaches and concerns mount

Fiscal cliff approaches and concerns mount
By Ian Swanson – 10/24/12 05:00 AM ET

Economists, budget hawks and business groups are growing more and more concerned that Washington will allow the nation to go over the fiscal cliff by doing nothing to prevent looming spending cuts and tax increases.

Earlier this year it seemed impossible that Congress could allow the nation to slip over the cliff, given predictions it could spark a new recession, and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has repeatedly warned lawmakers of dire economic consequences.
