Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan holds line on Freeholder Pay-to-Play Ordinance

Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan holds line on Freeholder Pay-to-Play Ordinance
May 11,2013

Hackensack NJ, As she stated she would, Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan has vetoed Freeholder Ordinance 13-06 voted upon by the Freeholder Board on May 1, 2013, which is an ill-conceived attempt to weaken what has been described as one of the strongest ordinances banning pay-to-play in the State of New Jersey.

The pretext given by the freeholders for passing this ordinance, that the prior ordinance they enacted approximately a year ago is somehow unconstitutional, fails to pass the “smell test.”  As the County Executive promised during her campaign, she will continue to use her power to block a return to the corrupt practice of pay-to-play that was all too rampant under the prior Democratic Machine.

In her veto letter, Donovan states, “It is my belief that candidates for office need to have the freedom to raise funds consistent with their First Amendment right to deliver their message to the voters.  And, unfortunately, as anyone who runs for office knows, we cannot depend on so-called “free media” provided by newspapers and others.  But there is also a need for candidates to be transparent so that voters know exactly who is paying for the distribution of those messages.”

Donovan emphasized her position that there should be one statewide law covering pay-to-play disclosure to limit the influence of both vendors and political leaders whose power lies in the political purse.  “We in Bergen County, are all too aware of the impact of late, undisclosed money “wheeled” in from all over the state and probably elsewhere, to unfairly tip the balance in an election,” stated Donovan.

Donovan cited numerous reasons for the veto including language that does not sufficiently prevent “wheeling”, a practice that needs to be stopped.  Also cited as unacceptable is the increase in contribution limits as well as weakening the penalties to those entities found in violation of the ordinance.

“We need to guarantee transparency, thereby instilling a level of confidence in voters,” said Donovan.  County Executive Donovan’s veto was delivered to the Clerk to the Freeholder Board on Thursday, May 9, 2013.

Mother’s Day Essay Contest Winner From Carousel Cakes

Carousel Cakes is a family owned business, located in Nanuet, NY, founded in 1965 by Martin Lefkowitz, selling over 40 different varieties of cakes. Their Red Velvet Cupcake was named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things in “O” Magazine. This family bakery did it again when Oprah chose their new Blue Velvet Cake to be on her December 2012 “O” List.

Mother’s Day is here again and it is always a very exciting time of the year for Carousel Cakes. “We do love it, as moms and grandmas can get that sweet gift for their day, and our experience shows that a cake is an important part of many family’s celebrations,” says co-owner, Nancy Finkelstein. “As this is officially the second busiest holiday (according to the National Retail Federation), we are already operating at full capacity getting everything ready for Sunday. Carousel has been doing this now for 38 years, so we are well-prepared for these seasonal peaks in our business as people are increasingly using our online store to send cakes all over the country, and surprising their loved ones.”

This year. Carousel Cakes ran an essay contest called the “Cake for my Wonderful Mother Contest”. They asked entrants to write an essay about how their mother inspired them.

Nancy Finkelstein explained how “the submissions we received were so moving. There is nothing more beautiful than the selfless giving of a mother. This was a theme that we saw running through all of these essays. It was very difficult to choose a winner. Some of us were in tears as we read through them. We ended up giving a little something to everyone who entered.”

IRS apologizes for targeting tea party groups

the new facism ? Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Douglas Shulman testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington

IRS apologizes for targeting tea party groups
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER
— May. 10 6:14 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service apologized Friday for what it acknowledged was “inappropriate” targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status.

IRS agents singled out dozens of organizations for additional reviews because they included the words “tea party” or “patriot” in their exemption applications, said Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups. In some cases, groups were asked for lists of donors, which violates IRS policy in most cases, she said.

The agency — led at the time by a Bush administration appointee — blamed low-level employees, saying no high-level officials were aware. But that wasn’t good enough for Republicans in Congress, who are conducting several investigations and asked for more.

The 10 Worst States to be Unemployed

The 10 Worst States to be Unemployed
By Bloomberg Rankings and Nikhil Hutheesing – May 9, 2013 4:53 PM ET

Not All States are Equal

Being jobless is always tough. In some states, though, it’s tougher than in others. Many provide barely enough unemployment income to let people scrape by. Where the unemployment rate is high, the competition for jobs is that much rougher. In states with a big gap between the richest and poorest, the psychological toll of joblessness can be greater, with high-paying jobs hard to get and low-paying jobs unequal to the bills. Across the board, nearly 11 percent in cuts in federally funded unemployment benefits went into effect on March 31, further shrinking resources.

No. 7 New Jersey

Unemployment rate: 8.99%
Benefit as a percentage of income: 38.39%
Wealth disparity ratio: 1.46

New Jersey has the greatest wealth gap in the nation. For every household with income of less than $10,000, there are 1.46 households making at least $200,000. With a high unemployment rate of 9 percent, plenty of people are getting unemployment insurance. It covers a bit more than 38 percent of lost income. Things may get worse: The automatic budget cuts that kicked in this year could result in $6.5 million less in federal grants going into the state’s unemployment insurance in 2013, according to Pew Charitable Trusts. On the bright side, New Jersey’s employed population, as of March, increased 1.16 percent from a year earlier.

Benghazi Talking Points Underwent 12 Revisions, Scrubbed of Terror Reference

When it became clear last fall that the CIA’s now discredited Benghazi talking points were flawed, the White House said repeatedly the documents were put together almost entirely by the intelligence community, but White House documents reviewed by Congress suggest a different story.

ABC News has obtained 12 different versions of the talking points that show they were extensively edited as they evolved from the drafts first written entirely by the CIA to the final version distributed to Congress and to U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice before she appeared on five talk shows the Sunday after that attack.

Republicans Are Refusing To Appoint Members To Obamacare’s Most Notorious Panel
Brett LoGiurato | May 9, 2013, 6:31 PM

One of the most politically intense fights over the Affordable Care Act was over the creation of the Independent Payment Advisory Board, infamously dubbed a “death panel” by Republicans during the 2010 elections.

On Thursday, Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell signaled that they would keep working to keep opposition alive by doing everything they can to impede the board’s implementation.

The two leaders wrote a letter to President Barack Obama, notifying him that they would not be submitting any recommendations to the panel because of their opposition to it and to the law in general.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Texting while driving has now surpassed drinking and driving as the leading cause of death among teens, according to a new study.
