Patient Reports credit card account information was compromised while he was a patient at Valley Hospital

May 9,2013

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police report that on May 1, 2013, a Pompton Plains resident reported that his credit card account information was compromised while he was a patient at Valley Hospital.

The fraudulent charges totaling $12,193 were subsequently made on his account. The matter is currently under investigation by the detective bureau.

Incorporating a few practices into your daily routine can help keep your cards and account numbers safe. For example, keep a record of your account numbers, their expiration dates and the phone number to report fraud for each company in a secure place. Don’t lend your card to anyone — even your kids or roommates — and don’t leave your cards, receipts, or statements around your home or office. When you no longer need them, shred them before throwing them away.

Other fraud protection practices include:

Don’t give your account number to anyone on the phone unless you’ve made the call to a company you know to be reputable. If you’ve never done business with them before, do an online search first for reviews or complaints.
Carry your cards separately from your wallet. It can minimize your losses if someone steals your wallet or purse. And carry only the card you need for that outing.
During a transaction, keep your eye on your card. Make sure you get it back before you walk away.
Never sign a blank receipt. Draw a line through any blank spaces above the total.
Save your receipts to compare with your statement.
Open your bills promptly — or check them online often — and reconcile them with the purchases you’ve made.
Report any questionable charges to the card issuer.
Notify your card issuer if your address changes or if you will be traveling.
Don’t write your account number on the outside of an envelope.

Ridgewood’s average taxpayers will shell out no more in municipal taxes this year than they did in 2012, as the Village Council approved the 2013 budget Wednesday night.

The council’s 4-to-1 decision to introduce the approximate $45.3 million spending plan and zero percent tax increase over last year leads up to a June 12 public hearing. On that date, residents will have an opportunity to comment on various components of the budget prior to the governing body’s adoption vote.

According to Village Manager Ken Gabbert, the municipal portion of this year’s taxes will equate to $3,973, the average amount paid in 2012.

The 2013 bill is based on the average Ridgewood home value of $687,364, a figure that was determined during a recently completed village-wide assessment.

Bicyclists: Time to change mind-set in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood News

The Ridgewood Council unanimously defeated a controversial bicycle ordinance Wednesday after a flurry of residents, business owners and other cycling enthusiasts presented arguments to show the proposal was counterproductive.

For months, council members had been mulling over whether to grant law enforcement and other authorities the power to cut locks on any bicycle secured in a way that impeded the proper use of a sidewalk. The ordinance was originally intended to address public safety concerns, with village officials suggesting that bikes chained to fences, sign posts and other fixed objects at the Ridgewood train station often block the way of pedestrians and those who require use of wheelchairs.

But opponents claimed the council was putting the “cart before the horse,” asserting that cyclists park their bicycles along fences because the village fails to provide an adequate number of bike stalls at the station and within the Central Business District. As a remedy, residents suggested that the village post signage and install additional bike racks as an alternative to an ordinance that is punitive in nature.

Whistle blown on Benghazi
By Jordy Yager – 05/08/13 08:14 PM ET

Government whistle-blowers on Wednesday choked back tears as they offered stark criticism of the administration’s handling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

One witness faulted the State Department’s review of the attack — saying it appeared aimed at protecting higher-ranking officials.

A second witness said United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice’s remarks blaming the attack on an anti-Islam film were shocking and offended the Libyan government.

Former Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory Hicks told lawmakers on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee that the film was unrelated to the attack. He said the comments frustrated Libyan officials, causing them to purposefully block for 17 days the FBI from entering the country to investigate the attack.

“I was stunned, my jaw dropped and I was embarrassed,” Hicks said of Rice’s remarks.

Cyberattacks a growing irritant in US-China ties

Cyberattacks a growing irritant in US-China ties
Wednesday May 8, 2013, 12:06 PM
BY CHRISTOPHER BODEEN
Associated Press

BEIJING  — Signs are growing that the sustained surge in cyberattacks emanating from China is imperiling its relations with the U.S., lending urgency to fledgling efforts by both governments to engage on the issue.

The Pentagon this week said China appeared to be cyberspying against the U.S. government, the first time it has made such an assertion in its annual report on Chinese military power. A bill introduced in the Senate on Tuesday would require the president to block imports of products using stolen U.S. technology or made by companies implicated in computer theft.

Washington’s sudden focus on Chinese hacking comes after rising complaints from U.S. businesses about theft of trade secrets. Amid growing evidence that the People’s Liberation Army and other state-backed groups are behind the infiltrations, Beijing’s statements that the cyberhacking allegations are groundless — repeated anew Wednesday by the Chinese Defense Ministry — are being broadly dismissed.

The Record

New Jersey’s hospitals are among the highest priced in the nation, ranking second only to California’s, and they charge tens of thousands of dollars more for some of the same procedures than the top academic medical centers in New York City, according to data released Wednesday by the federal government.

Charges varied widely across the state — from $203,000 for a knee or hip replacement at a Camden hospital to $41,800 for the same procedure at Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains, for example.

How New Jersey rates

Hospitals in New Jersey charge some of the highest fees in the nation to treat major medical conditions. The chart shows average charge per state and national average.

Most expensive states
California    $66,542
New Jersey    $60,900
Nevada    $58,253
Arkansas    $42,952
Florida    $42,744
(14th) New York    $33,319

Least expensive states
Maryland    $12,527
West Virginia    $19,344
Massachusetts    $20,602
Vermont    $20,667
Maine    $21,413

U.S.    $35,264

And two privately owned for-profit hospitals, Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus and Bayonne Medical Center, consistently charged prices that were among the highest in the state. In fact, Bayonne’s charges for treating heart failure, kidney and urinary tract infections, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were the highest or second-highest of 3,000 hospitals nationwide, according to an analysis by The Record of the data released by Medicare.

Technology director sought for Ridgewood schools

The Ridgewood News

The Ridgewood school district is seeking a director of technology to complement its push to enhance and encourage in-school technology use.

The ideal candidate, Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said in an announcement at Monday’s Board of Education (BOE) meeting, will be a “leader for technology education” and will be entrusted with making sure the district’s technological infrastructure is “robust.”

Previous discussions about the hiring of a new technology director, a district position that had existed and was cut for financial reasons, were met with support from all BOE members, according to the superintendent.
