Tri-state area coaches gather for football safety conference

EAST RUTHERFORD — There were no helmets. No shoulder pads. No cleats.

The grown men instead wore shorts, T-shirts and sneakers.

But they still lined up inside the Giants’ Timex Performance Center on Saturday to perform fundamental tackle drills, not as the middle-age youth football coaches they are but as the players they once were.

And they did it to improve the safety of their young players — and the future of their game.

About 50 tri-state area coaches attended USA Football’s Heads Up safety clinic, which covered concussion protocols and proper tackling instruction amid heightened concerns about head injuries that are sweeping the sport from the NFL to Pop Warner.

“The first action towards dealing with an epidemic is educating people,” said Heads Up instructor Gabe Infante, a former Paramus Catholic head coach who also served at Bergen Catholic and Queen of Peace. The West New York native is now the head coach at a Philadelphia high school-power, St. Joseph’s Prep.

USA Football, a non-profit organization endowed in 2002 by the NFL and NFLPA, nationally rolled out the Heads Up program last month in part to counter the health and PR crisis vexing the sport.

Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley officially opens

Bergen County’s first for-profit hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley, started admitting patients Saturday, marking the start of its new life as a full-fledged medical center.

The opening also coincided with another birth — that of Mason Caruso, who became the first baby delivered at the newly-renovated Westwood hospital early Saturday morning.

The start of inpatient admissions at the 128-bed facility is the culmination of a tortuous five-year effort that followed the closure of the previous hospital, under different ownership, in 2007.

The birth of 7 lb., 9.6 oz. Mason at 1:49 a.m. was decidedly less complicated but also reason for celebration on Saturday.

Mason’s mother, Lisa Caruso, 34, said she was happy to have a hospital only 10 minutes from her home in New Milford. And the private rooms — the hospital is the only one in Bergen County to have only private rooms — are a plus, too, she said.

“That’s one of the reasons we wanted to come here,” she said, as her husband, Vinny, cradled their child in his arms next to her bed.

As of Saturday afternoon, the hospital had admitted just five patients. But hospital officials have said they expect strong demand and are already talking about future expansion.

IRS may have targeted conservatives more broadly

images

IRS may have targeted conservatives more broadly
By David Lightman and Kevin G. Hall | McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON A group of anti-abortion activists in Iowa had to promise the Internal Revenue Service it wouldn’t picket in front of Planned Parenthood.

Catherine Engelbrecht’s family and business in Texas were audited by the government after her voting-rights group sought tax-exempt status from the IRS.

Retired military veteran Mark Drabik of Nebraska became active in and donated to conservative causes, then found the IRS challenging his church donations.

While the developing scandal over the targeting of conservatives by the tax agency has largely focused to date on its scrutiny of groups with words such as “tea party” or “patriot” in their names, these examples suggest the government was looking at a broader array of conservative groups and perhaps individuals. Their collective experiences at a minimum could spread skepticism about the fairness of a powerful agency that should be above reproach and at worst could point to a secret political vendetta within the government against conservatives.

The emerging stories from real people raise questions about whether the IRS scrutiny extended beyond applicants for tax-exempt status and whether individuals who donated to these tax-exempt organizations or to conservative causes also were targeted.

“Thousand Pound Challenge” : Food Drive

During the months of May and June, moving companies are at the peak of the season. They experience so many people moving and discarding food products. In an effort to assist those in need, we are participating in the “Thousand Pound Challenge”. Our offices will be collecting food and the moving companies will collect the food at the end of June.

Our goal of collecting a thousand pounds of food would be met with the cooperation of our friends, family and business associates. You are welcome to stop in to one of our offices to bring in your donations. Those who would like to collect food for this cause can call me and I will bring over boxes for your collections and pick them up when they become full.

Harris Poll: Only a third of U.S. adults qualify as very happy
UPI 6/1/2013 4:10:47 AM
ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 1 (UPI) –Only a third of U.S. adults say they are very happy — minorities show particularly pronounced declines in the past two years, a U.S. survey indicates.

A Harris Poll of 2,345 U.S. adults surveyed online April 10-15 by Harris Interactive found certain groups, such as minorities, recent graduates and the disabled, trended downward in the last couple of years.

“Our happiness index offers insight into what’s on the minds of Americans today and is a reflection of the state of affairs in our country,” Regina Corso, senior vice president of the Harris Poll, said in a statement. “While the attitudes on the economy may be improving, we’re seeing that this is not translating into an improvement in overall happiness.”

Since last measured two years ago, the Happiness Index was especially low among the Hispanic-American population. It is important to note that a causal link cannot be established, it might not be a coincidence that this drop coincides with a political landscape that has seen frequent, sometimes contentious, discussion of immigration policy in recent months, Corso said.

Americans earning under $50,000 per year were less likely to qualify as very happy than in 2011 — down from 33 percent to 29 percent among those earning less than $35,000, and from 35 percent to 32 percent among those earning between $35,000-$49,999.

IRS collects docs from 88 employees in investigation
Posted by
CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash

Updated 5:49 p.m. ET Friday 5/31

Washington (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service has told House GOP investigators they have identified 88 IRS employees who may have documents relevant to the congressional investigation into targeting of conservative groups, according to a congressional source familiar with the investigation.

The IRS asked these employees to preserve all the “responsive documents” on their computers, and it has been in the process of collecting it all to comply with congressional requests for information. The IRS missed its May 21st deadline to turn over documents to the House Ways and Means Committee.

The same source said the IRS argues it missed its deadline because of the scope of documents it is collecting.

Hunch About Bloomberg Brought Rivals Together
By SUSANNE CRAIG and JESSICA SILVER-GREENBERG

Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase are usually bitter rivals, competing for lucrative banking and trading business. But one day in April, the Wall Street titans found common ground: frustration with the Bloomberg news and financial data empire.

Goldman’s public relations chief, Jake Siewert, a former Treasury official, called his counterpart at JPMorgan Chase, Joe Evangelisti, with a simple question: “Do you have any issues with Bloomberg?”

Before he could finish his sentence, Mr. Evangelisti began rattling off his grievances, say people briefed on the call. At the top of the list was a Bloomberg News article in 2011 that likened the strife in an Italian town after a bad deal with JPMorgan to the fallout from the Nazis’ occupation in World War II. He also mentioned another episode when a Bloomberg reporter surreptitiously obtained an access code to listen to a private conference call for senior executives.

RHS Boys Track & Field: Four-peat’s sake, Ridgewood streak lives on
Friday, May 31, 2013
BY  GREG TARTAGLIA
ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR
The Ridgewood News

Four is the Ridgewood High School boys track and field team’s new favorite number.

Last Saturday in Randolph, the Maroons captured their fourth consecutive North 1, Group 4 state championship, becoming the first team in their section ever to “four-peat.”

The 112-92 win over Passaic Tech also meant that RHS swept the championships at all four major meets in which it competed – the Bergen County Relays, Big North Freedom Division, Bergen County Group A and North 1, Group 4 – for the first time in program history.

“They laid their claim to be the best [boys track] team in Ridgewood High School history by winning those four meets,” head coach Josh Saladino said of the 2013 Maroons. “It was our goal from the beginning of the season to win those four meets, and they were conscious of it throughout the season. But one of the reasons why we had the success we did is, we were able to focus on the meet we were in.”

Ridgewood sisters break pole vault records and do volunteer work
Friday, May 31, 2013

The Ridgewood News

Athletic records are set by high caliber athletes and then proudly displayed in trophy cases or plaques posted on school walls for all to see. And then they wait to be broken. Most athletes who set records anticipate that some day their record will be broken, but not many anticipate that it will be a younger sister who comes along and breaks it.

Ann Polcari, Ridgewood High School Class of 2008, set a 11’9″ pole vault record that stood for three years until her little sister Kayla, RHS Class of 2011, broke it her senior year at the prestigious Penn Relays, in 12’5.5.” “I told her that records were meant to be broken and I was so happy it was her,” recalls Ann.

Wealth of most Americans down 55% since recession

Wealth of most Americans down 55% since recession

(MoneyWatch) Increasing housing prices and the stock market”s posting all-time highs haven’t helped the plight most Americans. The average U.S. household has recovered only 45 percent of the wealth they lost during the recession, according to a report released yesterday from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

This finding is a very different picture than one painted in a report earlier this year by the Fed that calculated Americans as a whole had regained 91 percent of their losses. The writers of the report released yesterday point out that the earlier number is based on aggregate household-net-worth data. However, this isn’t adjusted for inflation, population growth or the nature of the wealth. Further, they say much of recovery in net worth is because of the stock market, which means most of the improvement has been a boon only to wealthy families.
