At approximately 3:00 AM on Thursday, June 4, 2026, a group of three masked thieves smashed through the locked front door of the shop. In a ruthless blitz lasting under two minutes, the bandits shattered glass display cases, grabbing rare individual cards and premium packs before fleeing the scene.
The total value of the stolen merchandise is estimated to exceed $40,000.
A Childhood Passion Interrupted by Crime
For shop owner Pablo, Big Pack Hobby Shop represents a childhood obsession turned dream job. Having collected, bought, and sold cards for over six years—riding the massive wave of the pandemic-era Pokémon resurgence—Pablo even wears his dedication on his sleeve with a tattoo of the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza on his arm.
When the store’s security alarms triggered, Pablo rushed straight to the location, only to find a scene of total devastation.
“It is so nostalgic across generations, I think it started to resonate with people,” Pablo said, reflecting on the community space he built. “This is a passion for me. I live and die by Pokémon.”
Shockingly, this marks the second time the store has been targeted by high-value theft. Pablo credits an outpouring of love and solidarity from fellow North Jersey business owners, loyal collectors, and young neighborhood fans for giving him the strength to push forward.
Taped directly to the wall next to a Pikachu plushie is a poignant reminder of why he keeps going—a handwritten letter from a local child reading: “Thank you for the Pokemon cards, I love them! They are awesome! Thank you for giving us more!”
Looking toward the future, Pablo plans to significantly upgrade store security infrastructure while keeping the community spirit alive.
