TRENTON, NJ — In one of the most closely watched and highly polarized races of the New Jersey primary season, Dr. Adam Hamawy emerged victorious on Tuesday in the crowded Democratic primary for the Garden State’s deep-blue 12th Congressional District.

Hamawy, an Egypt-born former U.S. Army combat surgeon and Iraq War veteran, is positioned to replace retiring veteran Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman.

The high-stakes race drew national attention not only due to the heavy backing Hamawy received from crazy progressive icons but also because of resurfaced details regarding his past volunteer work and legal testimony in the 1990s.

High-Profile Endorsements and Military Background

Dr. Hamawy’s campaign resonated strongly with the progressive wing of the Democratic party. His platform secured endorsements from prominent “Squad” members, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), alongside progressive Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Before entering the political arena, Hamawy earned a distinguished reputation as a military surgeon. He made national headlines for his lifesaving actions during the Iraq War, where he saved the life of Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) following a severe helicopter crash. More recently, his medical volunteer work inside the Gaza Strip has kept his profile in the national spotlight.

Resurfaced Scrutiny Over 1990s Activities

Despite his military service, Hamawy’s primary victory has ignited fierce debate over historical associations uncovered during the campaign. Critics and political opponents have pointed heavily to a 1994 internship Hamawy held with the now-defunct Benevolence International Foundation in Bosnia.

According to the 9/11 Commission Report, the foundation covertly provided financial and logistical support for terrorist activities under Osama bin Laden during the 1990s, with federal authorities later alleging in 2003 that it acted as a front organization.

Additionally, Hamawy’s past connection to Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman—the “Blind Sheikh” convicted in 1995 for seditious conspiracy related to the World Trade Center bombing plot—has drawn intense focus. During the 1995 federal trial, Hamawy was called as a defense witness, testifying that certain statements made by Abdel-Rahman were being taken “out of context” by government prosecutors.

“The voters of New Jersey have a right to know why Dr. Hamawy felt so strongly in defending a violent jihadist leader,” argued Steven Emerson, executive director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism.

Campaign Strikingly Rejects Critical Claims

Dr. Hamawy has never been charged with any crime or faced official accusations of personal involvement with terrorism. His campaign team has aggressively pushed back against the criticisms, labeling the attacks as “desperate, absurd, and bigoted.”

A campaign spokesperson strongly emphasized Hamawy’s decades-long record of service in the United States military. Regarding the relationship with Abdel-Rahman, the campaign stated:

At the time, the man in question was one of very few religious figures in what was then a very small Muslim community in New Jersey… Dr. Hamawy condemns that man’s violent rhetoric and actions, and all violence, hatred, and terrorism—and he will always. Dr. Hamawy had no contact with this person after they were arrested.”

With the primary behind him, Hamawy enters the general election cycle as the heavy favorite in the safely Democratic 12th District, though his past associations are likely to remain a focal point of debate leading into November.
