Newark NJ, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is preparing for a massive holiday surge, projecting approximately 6.6 million travelers to pass through regional airports and vehicular crossings during the peak 6-day Labor Day period (Thursday, Sept. 3 – Tuesday, Sept. 8).

Over 2.4 million passengers are expected at JFK, Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, and New York Stewart airports—flirting with the record set in 2025—while 4.2 million vehicles will hit area bridges and tunnels.

To help navigate peak congestion, the Port Authority is suspending non-emergency vehicular construction work from Friday morning through Tuesday evening while rolling out key operational updates across all major transit hubs.

Airport Travel & TSA Guidelines

Airport crowds are expected to peak on Thursday and Friday. Passengers are urged to arrive at least 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international departures.

Key Rules & Security Requirements:

  • TSA REAL ID Compliance: State-issued IDs that are not REAL ID-compliant are no longer accepted at TSA checkpoints. Travelers must show a passport, Global Entry card, or another approved form of ID.

  • TSA ConfirmID: Travelers without a compliant ID can use TSA ConfirmID at security for a $45 fee. This process adds 15 to 30+ minutes, so build in extra time.

  • Pre-Book On-Airport Parking: Parking demand at JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia will be high. Travelers parking for over 3 hours are strongly advised to pre-book online at least 3 hours prior to avoid drive-up surcharges.

Airport-Specific Disruptions & Updates

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

  • AirTrain Weekday Suspensions: Weekday AirTrain service to/from the Airport Train Station is suspended from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. due to replacement work (excluding Labor Day, Sept. 7). Shuttle buses will connect the station to terminals and parking.

  • Terminal C Rideshare: Uber/Lyft pickups for Terminal C have moved permanently to Level 3 of the Terminal C Garage.

  • Local Detours: Brewster Road and I-78 access near P4 parking remain detoured through November.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
