Everyone should have equal rights. Nice statement. Is Citizen’s Park going to look like the front of the United Nations building? It is physically impossible to fly all the flags that will demand equal rights. Flying one flag that is neither national nor state will lead to an overwhelming demand by all groups–sports, college, Women’s rights, etc.etc.. The council is opening up a hornet’s nest. No matter how we feel about any specific group’s “rights”, all groups are free to fly any flag at their home, but we should not use public spaces for such flags. It is one thing if a specific group is celebrating a specific day at Citizens. Then a special flag “might” lead to consideration for that day only. Even then, that will lead to multi requests by other groups for “Their day”. The council should not yield to the demands of a single group (of any kind) without seriously considering future consequences.
What does Mount Carmel think about having a gay pride flag 100 feet from the entrance to the church? Or about now having a future parade of who knows what flags flying in front of the church. Wouldn’t Village Hall be a better place to express the views of the Village Council?
Yes. Something for everyone.
I propose 5 poled. Center tallest with American flag. The other 4 rotating causes.
POW/MIA flag
Vatican flag
Irish flag (everybody claims to be Irish)
Teamsters flag
Lots of inclusive proclamations every month. The Facebook proclaimers do not speak for me. If one does try to engage in discussion they are labled as homophobic.
People fly all sorts of flags on their homes, and lately we are overrun with lawn signs. Have at it Change your curtains to the pride flag.
Do not impose your beliefs on me in the name of inclusiveness.
It is Van Neste, not Citizens. Just ‘splaining
Why not just pass a proclamation saying The Village of Ridgewood, during Gay Pride Month, celebrates all of our LBGTQ citizens, and fully supports their equal rights. Done, everyone happy. However, the cultural Marxists among the supporters really want more, and flying a flag is a useful psychological device in asserting power and how everyone should think. No shades of gray allowed,
As for Mt, Carmel, a nun in my daughters school flies the flag in front of her office. Don’t care, not my business. I think Mt. Carmel will simply stay out of the fray, especially as feelings may be mixed among the priests and elders of the Church.
Of course, the churches in town may be sorry at some point as the Cultural Marxist influence grows
Lot of truly dangerous people on that FB page. Challenge, as I did, you will get booted.
No. Just one pole and for the american flag only. Whoever wants some other flag flown should do it in their own property.
FB local pages are ridiculously loaded with stay at home mom comments about the huge excitement of flying rainbow flags in their lawns and windows. It’s like they almost wish their kids can be gay so that they can be represented by the flag. This type of dumb excitement really makes me think these people have nothing to do with their life and just look for anything to kill their boredom.
Those “inclusive” Facebook people are quick to condem those who disagree with them. So much for agree to disagree.
Lemmy: Why did you need to describe the gay pride flag flyers as stay at home moms, as if this diminishes their opinions. I don’t care if the posters hold three full time jobs. They are entitled to their opinion and I am entitled to mine.
@1.54. This is my impression but I could be wrong. In any case it seems to me like they have too much time in their hands to waste with BS like the flag debacle.
When is Heterosexual Pride Month?
Steeler flag?
In my view there is a tremendous difference in significance between flying a flag from private versus municipal property.
Yea, the Record had yet another editorial pushing this foolhardy idea adamantly. Their editorial page editor probably would be diagnosed as socially OCD.
It is very trendy
Will we fly the WhiteLivesMatter flag?
I agree with the comments about the facebook postings. Some are incredibly vicious and bullying. Some of these individuals are grandstanding for their family and friends, they have a gay son or brother or whatever and they have to come out strong from the starting gate.
Some of the biggest voices on FB are nastier than any comment I have ever seen on this blog.
