Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Blog learned today from Ridgewood Water (201-670-5500, extension 2271) that registered users of “Smart Irrigation” devices/systems are permitted to water on ANY day of the week (i.e., NO DAY OF WEEK RESTRICTIONS), between the hours of 12 midnight and 10:00 AM when Stage II Water Conservation Restrictions are in place.

Ridgewood Water subscribers who are not registered users of “Smart Irrigation” devices/systems are limited to watering on 2 designated days per week, based on odd/even house number, during significantly more restricted times of the day (e.g.; automated systems may be used only between 3:00 AM and 7:00 AM on the 2 designated days) during Stage II.

So, are we correct in believing that those who can afford to install “Smart Irrigation” devices/systems will most likely be using more water than those who can’t afford such systems (7 days of watering for 10 hours per day permitted, vs. 2 days of watering for 4 hours per day permitted)? Or, are the “Smart Irrigation” devices/systems really smart enough to conserve water? Could the “Smart” controller be bypassed to permit usage regardless of moisture conditions?

Bottom line – Are Ridgewood Water’s Stage II Water Conservation Restrictions biased in that they favor the rich?

  1. Right now there should be no water restrictions were definitely 3 inches over.

    1. The reality is that functionally there are no restrictions.

Just go walking early in the morning, even better on a day when it is raining.

They are not and probably never will be enforced, oh, unless you are an elderly widder with a sprinkler system……………………..

  2. No need to water when it’s been raining for 2 days. The smart sensors do that.

And compared to what people around here spend on, they’re relatively inexpensive.

  3. What a stupid law. I dont want to waste water, or waste money, so I put my hose and sprinklers out as needed.
    I call this DISCRIMINATION.

  4. We should build more apartments right!

    1. Well, apartments don’t have grass.

  5. We’ve heard that the water pressure at all these apartments is a big problem in town. They never put the proper plumbing from the road to the site

    1. I’ve never heard about the new apartments having water pressure problems, nor have I heard anything about the detailed layout of their plumbing system. I have heard that Ridgewood’s water causes cancer and other serious health problems.

      1. Ridgewood Water doesn’t “cause cancer and other serious health issues.” The
drinking water quality standards and guidelines have orders of magnitude of protection built into them and Ridgewood Water rarely, of ever exceeds standards. Put up your data or shut up. Stop the ridiculous care tactics .

        1. A water quality report is mailed to every resident in Ridgewood. If you read it, you would be aware of the danger and significant health risks. There are very real risks to consuming the water. It’s dangerous and irresponsible to falsely spread the water is safe, when in fact it is not.

  6. The water doesn’t taste the same as it did years a go. What are they going to it. Anyone know.

    1. It used to be delicious, from our own deep wells. When some became contaminated they took the easy way out and just bought surface water from Suez. So in order to disinfect all the bird and goose shit from resevoir surface water, they must treat it. When I turn on my faucet in the AM it smells like a chlorine pool.
      I wont drink this anymore

      1. Have you noticed the white clouds that sometimes form in glasses that have been soaking overnight?

Not every night, but too often…………………

  7. “”Could the “Smart” controller be bypassed to permit usage regardless of moisture conditions?””
Ask any sprinkler company technician, “smart controllers systems” they can be turned on manually whenever want to, as seen outside of their programed normal times.

  8. I’m surprised their not letting people leave their Spicket‘s on to pay for the building they bought next to the library for the new Ridgewood water headquarters. Oh yeah that’s right, they’ll just bury the expenses in the surrounding towns water bills! Or better yet, hire someone to steal over $500,000 in quarters no jail time in 30 years to pay it back interest free..

  9. The Ridgewood water company became a joke. The Best is when we see an outside water company delivering water bottles to the village, that tells you something the village employees are not even drinking village water. Hahaha we love it.

  10. I need to spend some money on some of these pump houses, I know that they’re old but I Needa a paint job or something come on.

  11. The Smart Controller Exemption Permit allows additional time to water based on the idea that the smart controller will apply the appropriate amount of water at the appropriate time. People running their systems without these controls are not using a specific calculation to determine how often or how much to water based on quantifiable data. There for those you are watering using smart controllers are watering more efficiently and responsibly and in effect wasting less water. The permit also requires a working rain sensor (which despite the testing backing them, a lot of homeowners will claim they never work so they don’t even utilize a rain sensor on their system. Considering the cost of water, the cost of these devices is not overly expensive in comparison. If you were to bring some more data to the table then you could try to make a point but you seem to be making assumptions and do not have a clear understanding of what a smart controller is, does and costs. I am a big proponent of smart controllers. They work and work well.
