Ridgewood NJ, is a Special Weather Statement the Nation Weather Service …CONDITIONS REMAIN FAVORABLE FOR RAPID FIRE SPREAD FOR  WEDNESDAY… An elevated potential for fire spread is possible for  Wednesday due to dry conditions and gusty winds. Antecedent dry conditions along with relative humidity values below 30 percent are expected. Wind gusts upwards of 25 mph are also expected. Despite the recent green-up, these conditions may allow for elevated fire spread if ignition occurs.

An elevated potential for fire spread exists today due to dry conditions and gusty winds. These conditions pose an increased risk for the ignition and rapid spread of wildfires. Here’s why:

  1. Dry Conditions: When the moisture content of fuels such as vegetation, trees, and grass is low, they become more susceptible to ignition. Dry conditions can result from factors like low relative humidity, lack of recent rainfall, and high temperatures. With less moisture in the fuels, fires can ignite more easily and spread rapidly.
  2. Gusty Winds: Strong and gusty winds can significantly influence the behavior of a fire. Wind can carry burning embers and ignite new areas, increase the rate of fire spread, and make it more challenging for firefighters to contain the blaze. The combination of dry conditions and gusty winds creates a dangerous situation as it enables fire to rapidly advance in the direction of the wind.

When dry conditions and gusty winds occur together, they create a potentially volatile situation for the spread of wildfires. It is crucial for authorities and communities to be aware of these conditions and take necessary precautions to prevent fire ignitions and ensure prompt response in case of a wildfire outbreak. This may include implementing fire restrictions, issuing fire danger warnings, increasing surveillance, and initiating firefighting operations.
