Ridgewood NJ, Tesla is recalling more than 1.8 million vehicles due to a hood latch issue that could increase the risk of a crash. The recall affects 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles. The problem lies in the hood latch assembly, which may fail to detect an unlatched hood after it has been opened. This can cause the hood to fully open while the vehicle is in motion, potentially obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the likelihood of a crash.
Investigation and Findings
Tesla began investigating customer complaints about the issue on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China on March 25. By mid-April, the automaker had identified a latch switch deformation as the cause in China. Continued investigation revealed higher rates of occurrence in China compared to Europe and North America, though the reason for this disparity remains unknown. As of July 20, Tesla identified three warranty claims or field reports for U.S. vehicles that are related to or may be related to the hood issue.
No Reported Incidents
Despite the recall, Tesla is unaware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that Tesla released a free software update to address the problem.
Owner Notification
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on September 22. Vehicle owners seeking more information can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Additional details are available on the NHTSA website.
Previous Recalls
This recall follows a series of others, including the recall of Tesla’s Cybertruck pickup last month to address issues with trim pieces and front windshield wipers. This marks the fourth recall for the Cybertruck since it went on sale on November 30.

It’s an over the air update. Big deal.
Like every other car, if you don’t close the hood latch properly, it’ll pop open.
