North Arlington NJ, a major warehouse fire broke out Friday morning, April 18, at a cooking oil recycling facility on Porete Avenue, prompting a multi-alarm emergency response and widespread smoke conditions in surrounding towns.
Multi-Alarm Fire Breaks Out on Porete Avenue
North Arlington Crews responded to the scene just before 11:00 a.m., where flames quickly engulfed the building at 85 Porete Ave. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm, and multiple neighboring fire departments were called in for mutual aid, including Kearny Fire Department, Lyndhurst Fire Department, Hasbrouck Heights Ladder 1, and East Rutherford Engine Co. 2, among others.
Smoke Affects Surrounding Areas
According to officials, thick smoke from the blaze spread across parts of Lyndhurst and Kearny, prompting local police to advise residents to keep their windows closed due to potential exposure to unknown substances inside the warehouse.
Structure Deemed a Total Loss
Although no injuries were reported, the structure sustained severe damage and will need to be demolished, confirmed North Arlington Police Chief Michael Horton. Firefighters continued working on extinguishing remaining hot spots well into the afternoon.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Emergency crews were on scene for several hours ensuring the area was safe and the fire was fully extinguished.
