RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The Village of Ridgewood has officially broken ground on the long-awaited West Glen Avenue sidewalk project (Phase 1), marking a major step forward in the community’s push for improved pedestrian safety along one of its busiest roadways.

In partnership with Bergen County and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP), the Village is also moving ahead with design plans for the remaining sidewalks extending down to S. Hill Road and Heights Road. Once completed, the project will create continuous sidewalks from North Monroe Street to S. Hill Road, giving pedestrians safer passage on a stretch of road that has long been a concern.

A Project Years in the Making

The West Glen Avenue safety initiative was originally launched under former Mayor Susan Knudsen, but later paused by the current council majority — Mayor Paul Vagianos, Deputy Mayor Pamela R. Perron, and Councilmembers Evan Weitz and Siobhan Winograd.

Public concern over multiple motor vehicle accidents on West Glen Avenue and surrounding streets has reignited urgency for the project. Mayor Vagianos has now directed that intersection blueprints be completed as quickly as possible to keep construction moving forward.

Pedestrian Safety Now a Top Priority

Village officials say the project is part of a broader commitment to pedestrian safety, which has become a priority for the Ridgewood Village Council in recent months.

“Improving walkability isn’t just about sidewalks—it’s about protecting our residents,” Mayor Vagianos said. “This project has been a long time coming, and we’re determined to get it done.”

  1. Phase 1? What was last year’s phase?

  2. Glad this is being done

  3. I was wondering why so much greenery was cut. This town is beginning to g to look so bare. Too many trees and shrubbery being cut down.

    1. No surprise. PFAS Paulie and his dirt crew want Ridgewood to be a city like Morristown.

    2. because there is a culvert on the other side

  4. This is not a good idea….all kinds of pedestrian traffic should be discouraged on this road.

  5. If pedestrian safety was a truly a priority for this council they never would have even considered developing the 5+ story ALF on Maple/Franklin. In fact the opposite is true…. that development is only going to add fuel to the fire!

  6. Glad there will be no crazy federal lawsuits over this.
I wonder how much that cost taxpayers.

  7. this is positive. This was a very dangerous road to walk on. Go ahead blog, lodge your complaints.

  8. What did the motor vehicles accidents cited as cause for this project have to do with a lack of sidewalk access? Why predicate what might seem like a good idea to many on a total lie? I remember when I was pinned between the door and steering wheel of my MX-5 after getting T-boned on S. Hill thinking Oh God if only there had been sidewalk this wouldn’t have happened.

  9. About Time, that’s one dangerous road

  10. How many old trees had to die?
