RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Members of the Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 will lace up their running shoes next month to participate in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in New York City, a powerful tribute to the heroism of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller.

The event, scheduled for September, retraces Siller’s final steps on September 11, 2001, when he ran through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel with 60 pounds of gear in an effort to reach the World Trade Center and save lives. Siller ultimately gave his life that day, becoming a symbol of courage and sacrifice.

This year marks a special moment for Ridgewood firefighters, as their Local 47 Run Team—first formed during the Ridgewood Run in May—takes on its second major event together. The team includes several Ridgewood firefighters and some of their spouses, blending fitness, camaraderie, and community service.

“It’s an honor to be part of an event that remembers the ultimate sacrifice of Stephen Siller and so many others,” said a Ridgewood firefighter involved in the run.

Organizers are encouraging community members to join and cheer on the team during this iconic 5K, which attracts thousands of participants from across the region each year.
