FATAL STABBING: Homicide Investigation Underway in Quiet NJ Town of New Milford

New Milford NJ, a routine welfare check early this morning in New Milford, New Jersey, quickly escalated into a homicide investigation after police discovered a man fatally stabbed multiple times inside a residence.

The investigation is being led jointly by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office (BCPO) Major Crimes Unit and the New Milford Police Department.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella confirmed the core details of the developing case:

New Milford Police originally responded to the River Road address to perform a welfare check. Upon arriving on the scene, officers located two adult men inside the home. Sadly, one of the men had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the location.

The second male’s status and whether he is a person of interest, a witness, or was also injured has not yet been disclosed by authorities.

Intensive Investigation Underway

The circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing are currently under an intensive and active investigation. The BCPO Major Crimes Unit, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the New Milford Police Department, led by Chief Brian Clancy, are pooling resources to determine the full sequence of events and identify the responsible party.

As a result of the investigation, on Thursday, September 25, 2025, JUSTIN J. WILHELM was charged with first-degree murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1); third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4d; third-degree possession of narcotics, N.J.S.A. 2C:35-10a(1); and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5d. WILHELM was transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation and remains in police custody.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the New Milford Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
