Ridgewood NJ, Major League Baseball is currently embroiled in an alleged gambling scheme after two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, were indicted on federal charges related to rigging pitches during games in June 2025. The charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, which could carry significant prison sentences.

Key Details of the Alleged Scheme

Rigging Pitches: According to the indictment, Ortiz, a starting pitcher, agreed with co-conspirators to intentionally throw a ball on specific pitches in exchange for bribes. Clase, the team’s closer, allegedly acted as an intermediary and received payments for arranging the rigged pitches

Payments and Winnings: Ortiz allegedly received $5,000 for a rigged pitch on June 15 and $7,000 for another on June 27. The scheme reportedly generated at least $450,000 in fraudulent winnings for the bettors.

Investigation Origin: Major League Baseball’s investigation began after a betting-integrity firm flagged “unusually high” wagering activity on specific pitch outcomes in two games involving Ortiz in June.

League Action: Both players were placed on non-disciplinary paid leave in July and remained on leave “until further notice” as investigations continued. MLB has stated it contacted federal law enforcement at the outset of its investigation and is fully cooperating.

Legal Status: Ortiz was arrested on Sunday in Boston, while Clase was not immediately in custody. If convicted on all counts, the players could face up to 65 years in prison, with the most serious charges carrying a potential maximum of 20 years.

This scandal follows other recent issues related to sports betting, including an NBA gambling scandal involving players and coaches and the lifetime ban of MLB player Tucupita Marcano in 2024.
