Schedler Community Meeting

Ridgewood NJ, HIGHLIGHTS- Here’s what this project means for our community:

What’s Being Excavated

🟧 48.8 million pounds of contaminated soil (dumped by the Village of Ridgewood)

🟧 1,100+ truckloads — a convoy stretching over 6 miles

🟧 24,000 sq ft of construction debris — half a football field (dumped by VOR)

🟧 Complete removal of the berm and destruction of 85 mature trees

🟧 Two contaminated areas still untested

What’s at Risk

🟧 Wetlands will be excavated and destroyed, displacing wildlife

🟧 No groundwater testing planned, despite known contamination

🟧 No school bus routing plan for W. Saddle River Road

🟧 Work begins January, 8 AM – 6 PM daily

🟧 Taxpayer-funded project exceeding
$20 MILLION

🟧 Community-friendly alternatives exist — Bioremediation – but the Village was directed not to evaluate them

🟧 This affects our air, our water, our children, our safety, and our homes. Significant and long-lasting environmental and community impacts are about to unfold at the Schedler site.

🟧 The LSRP has confirmed that ongoing highway-related pollution from Route 17 will continue to contaminate the area long after a one-time excavation.

Ongoing Pollution From Route 17 Requires a Long-Term, Sustainable Solution. We formally requested that the Village of Ridgewood evaluate, and publicly provide an alternative remediation plan that focuses on bioremediation and other low-disturbance methods, rather than large-scale excavation, trucking, and soil removal.

  1. This video is very telling. 54:25 mark
“we can certainly let mass amounts of people in that neighborhood know because we have a lot of information (email/phone numbers) stored for those folks.”— Village Manager

Why didn’t he use this communication to inform the community of the contamination and this very important meeting? They’ve done bare minimum or nothing at all to include the public.

  2. Video Mark 45:32

The problem is like like you said, we need to trust that you’ll take every reasonable measure and as a resident, I
feel like every reasonable measure would have been NOT dumping the soil that you knew was contaminated in the first place.

  3. Active litigation….hilarious…

  4. 48.8 million pounds of contaminated soil (pesticides, mercury, lead, benzopyrene and benzoanthreine) —
PLUS 24,000 sq ft of construction debris

This remediation will be upwards of $10 million—on top of the $1.5 million the Village Manager already spent on soil testing—it is impossible to ignore the glaring lack of accountability. At this point, the real question is why Village Manager Keith Kazmark is refusing to act. His inaction doesn’t just look negligent—it looks like he’s protecting people, or protecting himself. The public deserves to know which one it is.

Keith, hand it over to the Attorney General.

  5. Liar KK who was hired without an interview process, admitted that there was an option to cap the berm, he chose not to pick that option!!
It would have saved so much money and kept the kids safe!

  6. Village of Ridgewood: We “care” about the environment.
Also VOR: Anyway, here’s a plan to destroy wetlands, clear cut trees, and maybe test the groundwater… eventually, NOT.

  7. Was there a prize for ‘Most Expensive, Least Thought-Out Plan’? Because Ridgewood is going for triple gold.

  8. Imagine spending millions to remove soil… while ignoring the contamination that’s still falling from Route 17 every single day. It’s like mopping the floor while the bathtub is still overflowing.

    1. it’s early yet but I think we have our post of the day !

  9. Folks-

There’s a great life lesson here:

When you end up with a council stacked with failed lawyers and bored housewives, hide your wallets.

    1. Runner-up post of the day !

    2. It is long past time to retire the misogynistic “bored housewife” trope. Please insult them more creatively. Thank you.

      1. truth hurts

    3. it is what it is

  10. What happened to the two lawsuits? How is the project going forward with those two lawsuits in place?

    1. The remediation is separate from the development.

The VOR can’t do a thing until the remediation is complete and the lawsuit is heard.

The sneaky move in the short term is demolishing the Berm in the name of the clean-up…the truth is they have always wanted that extra acreage for Vagianus Field.

Anybody think a field–of any size–without a legitimate safety barrier along the highway is a good idea?

      1. Idk much about the lawsuit (s) but imo Stop the removal of the berm

Restraining order. File an Order to Show Cause for injunctive relief request a judge order everything be left status quo until resolution

        Plaintiff would probably be successful

    2. Neither plaintiff has requested that a Judge issue a stop work order.

    3. Neither plaintiff has requested that a Judge issue a stop work

  11. I vote for Scott Muller to personally shovel the contaminated dirt as he said he wanted to. I’m sure his pal PFAS PauLIE can lend him a shovel or 2.

  12. Right now the trees and the berm protect fellow Ridgewood residents, including elderly, children and disabled, from route 17 including noise and dangerous diesel pollutants and dangerous airborne road dust and particulate pollution

Clear cutting the lot and removing the berm puts fellow Ridgewood neighbors in harms way

This travesty should concern every single Ridgewood resident regardless of where you live

Shame on this Village Council and KK and Rogers

Shame on RBSA and Scott Mueller

    Shame on that engineer
    Has he been fired yet?

This is creating a dangerous environment for area neighbors and athletes

  13. The cost of this cleanup will be massive. You can bet that the additional Open Space taxes voters were conned into will be used for this.

  14. This is got to be the biggest screwup ever in the Village Of Ridgewood. Any elementary student would know that if you’re taking soil from locations that wants to house any kind of commercial building, you test the soil. I don’t give a shit if the soil came for month underneath an olive oil company, how damn stupid can someone pay. Shame on the villager Ridgewood top officials all of them. This soil came from car dealers in town, inspection station in town, water department locations throughout four towns, soil from burden community college. The villages responsible on all aspects were talking about removal of contaminated soil, and the responsibility of health and well-being of all neighboring residence and employees that worked at the location. This has been documented and if anyone gets sick while they are responsible. And the village failed yes failed played stupid about the situation. They didn’t do the right thing so they’re going to pay pay pay don’t care. The taxpayers are gonna get screwed in pain and a few Insurance company pays the wall that’s an insurance scam. Because the village top officials all knew where this dirt came from. They took it because it was free. I could imagine the payoffs that some of them received and stipends or other secret ways. there was a lot of back door meetings and dealings recording this. Stop bullshitting us you’re not that smart because of you top officials or really smart. You wanna be working at the Village Of Ridgewood with you. We called you out and we got your number. And regarding your an engineering moron, he should’ve been immediately discharged for his actions on this. He should’ve lost his title and lost his pension. And actually, he should’ve been fire 10 years ago. Everyone knows this. And this jerk actually said to someone that he’s the smartest man in three states yeah hello☠️

    1. I still believe the Village Hall wreck-o-vation was the biggest screwwup and not dealing with Valley Hospital in a correct manner , number 2 and of coarse there is the three amigos high density housing, number 3 oh and the turfing of Stevens and the RHS fields, number 4 , and then Schedler

  15. OK, I agree to that. Let’s not forget our beautiful parking garage, what a big waste of money. What a shame . It’s amazing awesome residence just don’t know what the hell is going on. They’re not saying nothing right now because everyone has been working the economy is going pretty strong, but one the bubble breaks again and the shit hits the fan. Remember last time when everyone was crying, look what I pay in taxes we can’t afford this anymore and people stop moving out and they can’t even sell the house. They just leave it remember that I do. Remember 75 stores empty throughout the CBD remember that I do. It was like a ghost town in the village just keeps on spending money that they don’t have. And they don’t care look at us. We got a triple bond rating big deal, you still gotta pay back the money.
