Trenton NJ, Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill is wasting no time in signaling her administration’s core focus: tackling New Jersey’s acute affordability and housing crisis. In a move that clearly emphasizes an intent to address development and housing access, Sherrill announced the appointment of Adam Gordon, Executive Director of the Fair Share Housing Center (FSHC), to her Transition Team.

Gordon’s appointment is widely seen as a major endorsement of policies aimed at increasing housing density and accelerating the urbanization of New Jersey—a strategy Sherrill frequently advocated during her successful campaign.

The Housing Crisis Demands “Urgent, Ambitious Leadership”

Adam Gordon confirmed that the Governor-Elect is prioritizing the issue, echoing her campaign themes:

“Governor-Elect Sherrill focused her campaign on affordability and New Jersey’s voters agreed — addressing the housing crisis is a top priority,” said Gordon.

Gordon stressed the critical timing for ambitious policy action, citing record-high housing costs and the potential for widespread crisis due to threatened federal funding cuts for eviction and homelessness prevention.

“With housing costs at record highs and federal funding cuts threatening thousands of New Jerseyans with eviction and homelessness, now is the moment for urgent, ambitious leadership,” Gordon added.

Fair Share Housing Center Brings Policy Expertise to the Table

By bringing the head of the Fair Share Housing Center into the transition process, Governor-Elect Sherrill is integrating decades of research and policy expertise directly into her administration’s planning. The FSHC has long been at the forefront of the fight for equitable housing development and challenging exclusionary zoning practices across the state.

Gordon expressed enthusiasm for the new role, stating he is eager to contribute FSHC’s policy expertise to deliver “real action on housing that our communities need.”

This appointment solidifies the incoming administration’s direction: a strong focus on developing more housing across the state, particularly affordable options, which will necessitate significant changes in local zoning and development regulations. This approach directly addresses the supply-side issues driving up costs but also signals a powerful push toward greater density and controlled urbanization across New Jersey.

What This Means for New Jersey Residents

For homeowners and renters, Sherrill’s focus on “affordability” is a hopeful sign. However, for suburban towns wary of “over-development,” this appointment underscores the likelihood of significant pressure from the state level to comply with higher housing mandates and implement policies that increase density to meet regional housing needs.

Sherrill’s transition team is setting the stage for a period of robust policy change aimed squarely at making New Jersey a more economically accessible place to live.

  1. She should focus on making the cities safe to live instead of try to force the suburbs to become new cities

    1. She should leave Ridgewood alone we have enough people in what they think are high places ruining our town. Let’s start with our Paterson based Village manager. Go back to where you came from buddy. And our past Hudson county mayor who put his claws in all the downfall of Ridgewood so far and his legacy is living on somehow. Bring in new blood and kick Sherrill, KK and now the new Paul and their stupid ideas back to the city environment and leave our town alone. Enough damage has been done

  4. “equitable housing development” whatever that means.

    1. You know what that means.

If you see it as negative, it means not in her neighborhood……….

  5. those who voted for her deserve it

    – utility prices will continue to increase with her focus on wind
    – the revolving door for criminals will continue
    – the public school curriculum will prioritize woke initiatives vs math/english/science/history
