Gottheimer & Lawler Team Up: The Bipartisan Fix for North Jersey’s Looming Energy Crisis

Fort Lee NJ, If you’ve opened your electric bill lately and felt a jolt of sticker shock, you’re not alone. New Jersey utility bills have surged by a staggering 45 percent in just the last two years.
Standing in Fort Lee alongside labor and local leaders, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) just unveiled a sweeping “all-of-the-above” energy strategy. The goal? Cut the red tape that is currently choking New Jersey’s power supply and drive down costs for families who are being squeezed at the kitchen table.
The Perfect Storm: AI, Data Centers, and a Shrinking Grid
Why are prices hitting record highs? According to Gottheimer, New Jersey is facing a classic supply-and-demand nightmare.
-
The Demand Surge: Driven by the AI revolution and a massive influx of data centers, energy demand in the region has jumped 10% in five years and is projected to climb another 25% by 2030.
-
The Supply Shortage: Over the last eight years, New Jersey’s grid has lost 1,500 megawatts of capacity—enough to power 1.2 million homes (the equivalent of Bergen, Essex, and Hudson Counties combined).
-
The “Data Center” Tax: Huge tech companies are plugging into an aging grid, often leaving everyday residents to shoulder the cost of the massive infrastructure upgrades they require.
“Energy isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Nobody in this state should be sweating over an electric bill at the kitchen table.” — Congressman Josh Gottheimer
The “More Energy, Lower Bills” Strategy
Gottheimer’s plan focuses on six critical pillars to modernize the grid and lower costs:
-
Produce More Power Now: Expanding generation via natural gas, nuclear, solar, and battery storage.
-
Cut the Red Tape: Serious permitting reform to stop “bad-faith” lawsuits from stalling essential energy projects.
-
Hold PJM Accountable: Fixing the broken regional power system (PJM) whose “disastrous” capacity auctions have jacked up wholesale prices.
-
Modernize Aging Plants: Converting old coal plants into cleaner, cheaper natural gas or renewable facilities.
-
Grid Coordination: Streamlining approvals between federal and state agencies to get power to homes faster.
-
Immediate Relief: Promoting federal assistance like LIHEAP and tax credits for families in crisis.
The Bipartisan Solution: 4 Key Bills
Gottheimer is partnering with Rep. Mike Lawler (NY-17) on a legislative package to bring these changes to D.C.:
-
Making Reviews Certain Act: Sets clear timelines for federal environmental reviews.
-
Grid Expansion and Reliability Act: Accelerates upgrades in emergency “energy corridors.”
-
Commonsense Review Act: Streamlines paperwork for energy infrastructure.
-
Build More Power Act: Funds the conversion of coal plants to higher-capacity, cleaner energy.
Holding Big Tech Accountable
A major part of the new “More Energy, Lower Bills” Task Force will be ensuring that Big Tech companies pay their fair share. Gottheimer emphasized that major corporations building power-hungry data centers should help fund the grid they rely on, rather than passing those costs onto New Jersey homeowners.

The midget from Tenafly is good at these press conferences, but he never gets anything done.
He held a bunch at the Cedar Lane Bridge in Teaneck. The bridge hasn’t been touched.
He talked a LOT about the SALT limit, then voted against it.
Face it folks, he’s all talk and no action.
As for NJ energy, we were marched down this road by Democrats, all of them friends with the midget from Tenafly.
We need more natural gas pipelines for cheap clean gas from PA
Glad you differentiated it from the gas pipeline from Tenafly……
