What Makes a “Healthy Town”?
Being named a Healthy Town isn’t just a participation trophy—it’s a rigorous achievement. To earn this title, Ridgewood and its peers had to demonstrate a data-driven approach to community health.
The Quality Institute evaluates towns based on:
-
Physical Activity: Creating walkable spaces and active programming.
-
Nutrition: Increasing access to healthy food options.
-
Safe Environments: Ensuring infrastructure supports a high quality of life.
-
Mental Health: Providing resources and reducing stigma at the local level.
“Each year, the Mayors Wellness Campaign continues to raise the bar for what local leadership can accomplish to strengthen the health and wellness of their communities,” says Julie DeSimone, Vice President of Community Health at the Quality Institute.
The 2025 Winners: A Record-Breaking Year
In addition to the 45 Healthy Town winners, the program recognized 12 “Healthy Towns to Watch” and four “Healthy Towns Up-and-Coming.” This surge in participation proves that NJ local leaders are prioritizing health as a core pillar of governance.

Why This Matters for Ridgewood Residents
For those living in Ridgewood, this designation is a badge of honor. It signifies that the local MWC committee and village leadership are actively researching community needs and implementing programs that make it easier to live, work, age, and play healthily.
Whether it’s through improved park maintenance, local wellness seminars, or mental health initiatives, Ridgewood is officially one of the best places in New Jersey to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
