Silencing Schedler? Ridgewood Omission of Toxic Soil Meeting Sparks Neighborhood Outrage

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Residents are sounding the alarm after the Village’s “Weekly News and Events” email, released early Friday morning, contained zero mention of the high-stakes Schedler Soil Remediation Community Meeting held this past Monday. For the families living near the historic Zabriskie-Schedler property, this omission feels like more than just a clerical error—it feels like a calculated move to keep the neighborhood in the dark.

Is the Ridgewood Village Council listening to its neighbors, or just the music? Residents of the Schedler neighborhood are calling last night a “slap in the face” after not a single member of the Village Council attended the high-stakes Zabriskie-Schedler Property Soil Remediation Community Meeting.

The Cleanup: What You Need to Know

Despite the lack of mention in the official weekly blast, a massive environmental cleanup is officially on the calendar. Here are the fast facts on the upcoming project:

  • Start Date: Work is scheduled to begin between April 27 and May 4, 2026.

  • Duration: The project is expected to last six to eight weeks.

  • The Scope: Crews will be removing contaminated soil and solid waste from the Zabriskie-Schedler property, a site recognized as a Bergen County historic landmark.

“How Predictable”: Neighbors React to Missing News

For the property owners and residents surrounding the site, the lack of transparency in the Village’s communication is the latest in what many call a long history of “disrespect.”

The Monday community meeting was intended to address safety protocols, dust control, and the logistics of hauling contaminated waste through residential streets. By omitting the summary of this meeting from the weekly newsletter, critics argue the Village is signaling a lack of sensitivity toward those most affected by the remediation.

“They just wish we would all shut up and let them continue to disrespect the surrounding property owners/neighborhood,” one resident noted. “So insensitive.”

Why the Schedler Remediation is Controversial

The Zabriskie-Schedler property has long been a focal point of debate in Ridgewood. Balancing the preservation of its 18th-century history with modern-day needs—and now, the removal of hazardous materials—has created a rift between municipal leadership and local advocates.

As the April 27 start date looms, the community is left wondering: If the Village won’t highlight these meetings in their own newsletters, where else is the transparency lacking?

  1. the council does not care becuase they know you will vote Democrat no matter what

  2. This place is a joke, everything is out of control, management doesn’t know what’s going on. They were worrying about the wrong things sometimes. Get back down to basics get out of the office and get on the road. Stop with this micromanaging bullshit, just like the other shit had to who started a few years back with monitoring the vehicles where they are, please how much is that saving the village can you give us a a number. We’ve been waiting five years for that.

  3. Is “Fact Check Friday” ever coming back from hiatus? I am so lost without it.

  4. I would like to know what the council had for dinner at the big Bareburger PAC presentation. And who paid for it.
