
Teen Arrested After Attempting to Disarm Police Officer During Bergen County Domestic Violence Investigation

Hasbrouck Heights NJ, A routine domestic violence probe in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, took a dangerous turn on Thursday morning when a 19-year-old suspect attempted to pull a police officer’s weapon from its holster.
Thanks to the quick actions of local law enforcement and surrounding mutual aid departments, the suspect was safely subdued and taken into custody without further incident.
The Incident: From a Domestic Dispute to a Physical Altercation
Around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, officers from the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department responded to a business near the intersection of Boulevard and Hamilton Avenue following reports of a possible domestic dispute.
The initial investigation, led by Officers Johanna Sanchez, Alessandro Ciminata, and Detective Cosimo Marino, revealed that a male suspect had forcefully ripped a cell phone from a woman’s hand before fleeing the scene.
While officers were actively gathering details from the victim, the accused individual unexpectedly returned to the scene. According to Captain John Behr, the man exited his vehicle and aggressively advanced toward the victim. Police stated that he “physically attempted to force his way through officers” while completely ignoring verbal commands.
Suspect Tries to Grab Officer’s Weapon
Officers immediately moved to protect the victim and brought the resisting suspect to the ground. While on the ground, the situation escalated significantly when the teen managed to grab a police officer’s gun directly from its holster.
Recognizing the extreme danger, a call for immediate backup was issued. All available Hasbrouck Heights units, along with officers from the neighboring Wood-Ridge and Carlstadt police departments, rushed to the scene to assist.
The suspect, identified as Gabriel Hernandez-Caldero, 19, of Lodi, NJ, was successfully disarmed, tackled, and placed under arrest.

Following the altercation, Hernandez-Caldero was transported to the Bergen County jail. He faces a long list of serious criminal charges, including:
