Ridgewood NJ, The energy was palpable at Benjamin Franklin Middle School this morning as the 13th Annual Chief Michael Feeney Junior Police Academy officially kicked off with its traditional swearing-in ceremony.

Designed to foster leadership, accountability, and civic pride, this intensive week-long program welcomes a new class of local cadets ready to experience what it truly means to serve the community.

Inside the Academy: Hands-On Public Safety Training

Throughout the week, cadets will move beyond the classroom to participate in immersive, hands-on activities. Led by dedicated officers from the Ridgewood Police Department, the curriculum provides a dynamic, firsthand look at:

  • Law Enforcement & Public Safety: Understanding daily operations, modern policing techniques, and safety protocols.

  • Teamwork & Unity: Collaborating on tactical exercises that build trust and communication.

  • Leadership Development: Learning the core values necessary to become proactive community role models.

Honoring a Lasting Legacy: The Story Behind the Academy

While the academy teaches vital public safety skills, its heart lies in its dedication to a beloved local hero.

The annual program is held in deep honor and memory of Michael Feeney, a cherished Hawes Elementary School student who passed away at just 10 years old following a courageous four-year battle with Ewing sarcoma.

Michael’s vibrant enthusiasm, unwavering determination, and profound love for the Ridgewood community earned him the title of Honorary Police Chief. Today, his spirit continues to serve as the ultimate inspiration for the program, motivating every young cadet who puts on the uniform.

The community wishes the new class of cadets and their instructors a fun, safe, and truly memorable week!
