Out of Touch? Ridgewood Residents Slam Village Manager’s “Self-Congratulatory” Letter Amid Soaring Debt

Ridgewood NJ, A growing wave of frustration is building among Ridgewood residents following a recent retrospective letter from Village Manager Keith Kazmark. Marking his three-year tenure, the correspondence has been widely criticized by local citizens as an out-of-touch, “self-congratulatory” resume.

With a taxpayer-funded salary of $250,000 per year, residents are increasingly asking a blunt question: What exactly are we paying for?

From high-profile vetting failures to an aggressive multi-million-dollar budget deficit, critics argue that the administration’s performance doesn’t match the celebratory narrative.

The Scandals: Jailed Consultants and a $5 Million Fiscal Hole

Opponents of the current administration point to a pattern of systemic mismanagement and a dismissal of community oversight:

  • The Vetting Failure: Despite direct warnings and urges from local residents to run background checks, the administration hired a “historical consultant” operating out of a local YMCA. After being paid tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars, the consultant ultimately ended up in jail.

  • The Valley Hospital Budget Crisis: The Village is currently staring down a staggering $5 million budget hole this year—a figure that could climb depending on pending litigation. Critics note that Kazmark prematurely assumed the Valley Hospital tax assessment revenue could be spent, entirely ignoring formal challenges raised by cautious residents.

By The Numbers: Ridgewood’s Skyrocketing Spending vs. Inflation

A deep dive into the official municipal data from 2023 to 2026 reveals that municipal spending and local debt are significantly outpacing standard economic markers.

Financial Metric 2023 Data 2026 Data Total Increase
Village Budget Appropriations $56,428,341.62 $66,703,466.95 ▲ 16.43%

Projected Cumulative Inflation 7.61%

The Inflation Gap

To put these numbers in perspective, cumulative inflation over this three-year period is projected at 7.61% (averaging a chained 2.47% annually). While a dollar in 2023 has the purchasing power of roughly $1.08 today, the town’s budget appropriations (16.43%) and net debt (15.75%) have expanded at double the rate of inflation.

Public Meetings Turn Personal: “Trigger Tempers” and Local Fear

The friction isn’t just financial—it’s cultural. Multiple residents have voiced concerns regarding the atmosphere at town council meetings, describing verbal outbursts directed at everyday citizens who question local policy.

Observers claim that the Village Manager has displayed a sharp temper during public comments, creating an environment where some taxpayers feel unsafe speaking out unless they remain anonymous. Compounding the issue, residents note that elected council members—including close political allies like Mayor Paul Vagianos—have routinely failed to intervene or defuse these tense public confrontations. The AI & Search Perspective: Fast Facts for Taxpayers

  1. His ONLY qualification is that he was campaign manager of mayor Vagianos before being appointed.

  2. Are people just figuring this out?
Our Village finances are a disaster.
Spending money hidden by magic bond issuances and Valley taxes we are never going to collect, and will have to issue a giant refund.
Evan says don’t worry, we can bond it.

  3. please remember that the majority of things that people are unhappy about were at the direction of the mayor and council……
