PARAMUS, NJ — An early morning garbage truck fire forced emergency crews to scramble on University Way in Paramus on Thursday, July 16, 2026, serving as a stark public reminder about the dangers of improper waste disposal.

At approximately 6:50 a.m., dispatchers alerted the Paramus Fire Department. Crews from Engine 2, Engine 3, and Engine 4 quickly responded to the scene on University Way following reports of an active garbage truck fire.

Upon arrival, first responders found a dramatic scene: the blazing contents of the garbage truck had been dumped directly onto the roadway to prevent the entire vehicle from being consumed by flames. Paramus firefighters immediately went to work, safely extinguishing the pile of burning trash, preventing the fire from spreading, and securing the surrounding area.

The Hidden Culprits: Why Your Household Trash Could Spark a Fire

While the official cause of this specific fire remains undetermined, local officials are using the incident to highlight a growing, highly dangerous trend in community sanitation.

Fire departments nationwide are seeing a massive spike in sanitation fires caused by two common household items:

  • Lithium-Ion Batteries: Commonly found in rechargeable devices, cell phones, laptops, and toys. When thrown into regular household garbage, these batteries easily become crushed, punctured, or damaged during collection and processing. This damage triggers “thermal runaway,” creating self-sustaining, high-intensity fires. Lithium-ion batteries should never be placed in regular trash.

  • Pool Chlorine Tablets: If disposed of improperly, chlorine tablets can chemically react with organic waste materials inside a garbage truck, generating enough intense heat to spark a sudden chemical fire.

The Paramus Fire Department urges all residents to protect sanitation workers, local volunteers, and neighbors by utilizing proper hazardous waste disposal sites for electronics and pool chemicals.
