Stanley Cup Comes to Ridgewood High School: Former RHS Educator Returns with Hockey’s Greatest Trophy

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — History made a special stop at Ridgewood High School on Thursday, July 16th, when the iconic Stanley Cup arrived on campus alongside a familiar face in Ridgewood athletics.
Bill Burniston, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, brought sports’ most prestigious trophy home to share with the RHS community. Burniston served as an Athletic Trainer, Strength Coach, and Physical Educator at Ridgewood High School from September 1993 to July 2007, leaving a lasting legacy among Maroons athletics.

What is the Stanley Cup?
For those unfamiliar with sports history, the Stanley Cup is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff winner.

The Oldest Trophy in North American Sports: First awarded in 1893, it predates the creation of the NHL itself and carries more than 130 years of history.

A Unique Tradition: Unlike trophies in other major sports (where a new trophy is made each year), there is only one official Stanley Cup that travels from champion to champion. Each winning player and coach gets personal time—traditionally 24 hours—to spend with the Cup in their hometowns or communities.

Etched in History: The name of every player, coach, and staff member on the winning team is physically engraved directly onto the bands of the Cup.
