Exploring Alexander Hamilton’s Legacy: Bergen County Leaders Tour Historic Paterson Landmarks

Members of the Bergen County Administration recently joined Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh for an exclusive guided tour of some of North Jersey’s most remarkable cultural and historical sites. The delegation explored the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, the newly restored Hinchliffe Stadium and Museum, and Paterson Vista State Park.
The tour highlighted Paterson’s rich cultural heritage and its unique position as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution—a legacy largely forged by Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
Alexander Hamilton: Architect of American Industry
Long before Paterson earned its nickname as New Jersey’s famous “Silk City,” Alexander Hamilton envisioned the area as the engine that would drive a newly independent nation toward economic self-sufficiency.
As the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton recognized that the United States could not rely solely on agriculture or European imports. To achieve true independence, America needed to manufacture its own goods. His economic vision rested on three major pillars:

Report on the Subject of Manufactures (1791): Outlined a bold blueprint for government support of domestic industry, manufacturing, and technological innovation.

The First Bank of the United States: Provided the financial credit and investment infrastructure necessary to fund large-scale industrial projects.

Protective Tariff Policies: Shielded young American manufacturing enterprises from foreign competition.
Harnessing the Power of the Great Falls
In 1791, Hamilton founded the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures (S.U.M.) to put his economic theory into practice. He selected the site of Paterson—named in honor of New Jersey Governor William Paterson—because of its location alongside the powerful Great Falls of the Passaic River.
Captivated by the sheer power of one of the nation’s largest waterfalls, Hamilton designed a groundbreaking plan to harness the rushing water to drive factory machinery. This marked one of the earliest attempts in U.S. history to pair natural water power with large-scale industrial manufacturing.
While early efforts faced obstacles, Hamilton’s foresight paid off over the 19th century as Paterson transformed into a booming industrial powerhouse, world-famous for its textile and silk manufacturing.

Today, Hamilton’s legacy lives on. The Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park stands as a testament to his revolutionary vision, drawing visitors from across the country to experience its natural beauty and industrial heritage.
