TRENTON, NJ — State Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Morris, Passaic) is calling on federal authorities—specifically Assistant U.S. Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon—to expand their investigation into New Jersey’s voter registration and jury selection systems following reports that thousands of non-citizens were mistakenly registered to vote.
The demand for federal oversight comes amidst growing controversy over computer glitches, state agency oversight, and disclosures surrounding the state’s potential jury pool.
Thousands Registered Following “Computer Glitch”
The controversy deepened after Governor Sherrill acknowledged that a “computer glitch” led to 6,600 non-citizens being registered to vote in New Jersey, with at least 400 actually casting ballots.
While state officials initially pointed toward IDEMIA—the vendor servicing the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC)—the company has denied fault. IDEMIA maintains that responsibility lies with the New Jersey Department of State and the Division of Elections for failing to conduct proper oversight.
Compounding the voter roll issue, the Department of Homeland Security previously identified over 35,000 potential non-citizens on New Jersey’s voter rolls.
75,000 Non-Citizens Discovered in NJ Jury Pool
Tensions escalated further following disclosures that 75,000 non-citizens were included in New Jersey’s prospective jury pool.
Because the New Jersey Judiciary compiles prospective juror lists from agency sources—including the MVC, Division of Taxation, and Division of Elections—Pennacchio argues the overlap highlights systematic vulnerabilities across state databases.
“The disclosure that 75,000 non-citizens were summoned as potential members of juries screams for a thorough federal investigation,” said Senator Pennacchio. “What is of concern to me is that there may exist in these ever-increasing numbers a large pool of undocumented immigrants which may be drawn from to potentially change an election.”
Pennacchio Slams State Investigation as a “Whitewash”
While the Governor’s office has called for an independent state-level investigation, Senator Pennacchio dismissed the move as a “whitewash.” He argued that given the scope of the errors and a lack of legislative inquiry, federal intervention is necessary to ensure election integrity.
Pennacchio is renewing his push for Senate Bill S-1332, legislation he first introduced in 2021. The bill would establish mandatory cross-referencing between state voter registration records and judicial jury selection data to automatically identify and remove ineligible registrations.
“As the scope of this problem grows daily and with the refusal of the Democrat Legislature to investigate, it is obvious the U.S. Attorney General’s office must take charge,” Pennacchio concluded.
