Newark Penn Station NJ, Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT have officially announced the start of initial construction for the long-awaited Sawtooth Bridges Replacement Project. Backed by a $133 million Federal-State Partnership grant, this project marks a major milestone in modernizing the nation’s busiest passenger rail corridor.
In a joint statement, Amtrak President Roger Harris and NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri highlighted the critical necessity of replacing the nearly 120-year-old structures to ensure long-term reliability for more than 200,000 daily commuters and passengers along the Northeast Corridor (NEC).
Transforming the Northeast Corridor
The $133 million grant funds essential “enabling components” that lay the groundwork for full bridge replacement. The Sawtooth Bridges project is part of a broader, multi-billion-dollar series of rail infrastructure investments.
Key highlights of the announcement include:
-
Infrastructure Renewal: Replacing century-old bridges to eliminate bottleneck delays and improve operational safety.
-
Momentum Following Portal North Bridge: The project comes just months after the inaugural train crossed the brand-new Portal North Bridge.
-
Future Federal Funding: Amtrak has formally applied for an additional $3 billion in federal grants to fund future rail infrastructure upgrades, including final construction phases for the Sawtooth Bridges.
Proving Success During the FIFA World Cup
The partnership between Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT extends beyond long-term capital construction to real-time operations. The agencies recently demonstrated their combined capacity during the FIFA World Cup, successfully transporting over 185,000 soccer fans to and from the stadium across the tournament’s first four matches alone.
With joint operations, infrastructure management, and station coordination firing on all cylinders, both transit leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining top-tier service through the remaining matches—and for everyday tri-state commuters long into the future.
