In Glen Rock, NJ, local emergency responders faced life-threatening conditions as water levels surged rapidly. The Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department responded to 15 flooding-related emergency calls throughout Friday evening.

The most critical incident occurred when a vehicle with two passengers became trapped in rapidly rising floodwaters. Working in tandem with the Glen Rock Police Department, firefighters waded directly into the floodwaters as the car continued to fill with water, pulling both occupants to safety just in time.

Rescue Boats Deployed as Route 208 and Major Roads Submerge

The flooding triggered chaos across regional transit corridors. Stretches of Route 208 were completely shut down, prompting first responders in Glen Rock and Fair Lawn to deploy rescue boats to reach motorists stranded in deep water.

The flash flooding claimed numerous vehicles across local towns:

• Fair Lawn: A brand-new, one-week-old BMW sedan was submerged on Plaza Road North.

• Glen Rock: A 2-door Acura coupe stalled out and was stranded on Maple Avenue.

• Hawthorne: Multiple vehicles were trapped on Route 208 Northbound as water rapidly overwhelmed the roadway.

Major Highway Closures & Statewide Impact

Beyond local municipal roads, state highways experienced heavy inundation and storm damage:

• Route 17 Southbound: Closed in all lanes at Route 46 in Hasbrouck Heights around 6:35 p.m.

• Route 9W Northbound: Closed north of the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Alpine around 7:04 p.m.

The severe weather system knocked down trees and power lines while causing travel restrictions and road closures in Burlington, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, and Union counties.
