Severe Storms Slam New Jersey: Tens of Thousands Lose Power as Downed Trees Shut Down Ridgewood Roads

Ridgewood NJ, A powerful line of severe thunderstorms swept through New Jersey on Friday, August 7, packing 60 mph wind gusts that brought down trees, tore down power lines, and left tens of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity across the Garden State.

Ridgewood Road Closure & Local Power Outages

In Ridgewood, NJ, emergency crews are responding to storm damage on N. Hillside Place. The roadway remains completely closed between N. Monroe Street and West Ridgewood Avenue after strong winds knocked down a large tree and pulled down active power lines.

A localized power outage is active in the surrounding neighborhood. PSE&G crews have been dispatched to clear the hazards and restore power. Local officials advise all drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the debris is removed and lines are safely repaired.

Tens of Thousands Without Power Across New Jersey

The damage in Ridgewood reflects a much broader pattern across the region. As severe thunderstorms pushed out of eastern Pennsylvania into New Jersey’s humid air mass, damaging wind gusts as high as 60 mph knocked out power to over 40,000 customers at the peak of the storm.

By 8:00 p.m. Friday, statewide outage numbers began to improve, but 33,550 customers remained in the dark:

• PSE&G: Reported 23,271 outages (down from over 30,000). The hardest-hit areas include Passaic, Union, Middlesex, Essex, and Hudson counties.

• JCP&L: Reported 9,184 outages, primarily concentrated in Morris, Monmouth, and Warren counties.

• Orange & Rockland (O&R): Reported just over 1,000 outages, all concentrated in Bergen County.

More Severe Weather Expected Saturday Evening

National Weather Service forecasters warn that the severe weather threat is not over yet. Another round of scattered showers and strong thunderstorms is expected to develop across New Jersey during the evening and overnight hours on Saturday, August 8.

Residents are encouraged to keep mobile devices charged, secure loose outdoor objects, and monitor local utility outage maps for updates.
