Firefighter Injured in 2-Alarm River Edge House Fire; Bergen County Hazmat Called Over Lithium-Ion Batteries

River Edge NJ, A firefighter sustained minor injuries while battling a heavy 2-alarm house fire on Taft Road in River Edge, New Jersey, on Sunday morning. The incident required a multi-town mutual aid response and prompted a dispatch of the Bergen County Hazmat Team due to the presence of lithium-ion batteries inside the structure.

Heavy Flames Greet First Responders on Taft Road

At approximately 9:40 a.m., the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the 200 block of Taft Road following reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, Chief 1-0 reported heavy fire pouring from the rear of a single-story residential ranch home.

Fire crews immediately initiated a working fire assignment, stretching two hoselines to knock down the main body of the blaze while simultaneously conducting primary searches inside the home.

2nd Alarm Mutual Aid and Hazmat Intervention

Due to the intensity of the flames, the incident quickly escalated to a 2nd Alarm, bringing mutual aid resources to the scene for fire suppression and overhaul operations. Assisting departments included:

• Oradell Fire Department

• New Milford Volunteer Fire Department

• City of Hackensack Fire Department

• Paramus Fire Department

During firefighting operations, crews discovered several lithium-ion batteries inside the residence. The Bergen County Hazmat Team was requested to assist with the safe handling, cooling, and removal of the hazardous materials. Officials have not stated whether the batteries contributed to starting the fire.

Injuries and Cause Under Investigation

One firefighter was treated at the scene and transported by Holy Name EMS to a local hospital with minor injuries. Officials confirm the firefighter is expected to make a full recovery. No civilian injuries were reported.

Local agencies, including the River Edge PBA Local 201 and the River Edge Volunteer Ambulance Service (REVAS), assisted throughout the emergency response. As of Sunday afternoon, the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
